Corrine, regarding ComboFix and the Windows Recovery Console, do not many PCs these days have their own version of the recovery console installed as part of their 'reinstallation' process? Would ComboFix recognize this if this were the case?

Now that the old antivirus suite has been removed, it is important to ensure that the Windows Vista firewall is turned on:

Click Start > Control Panel.  Under Security, click "Check this computer's security status". Make sure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.

Next, an antivirus software needs to be installed.  The following antivirus software programs are free for personal use, Microsoft Security Essentials being my favorite.  (Note if MSE is installed, it will deactivate Windows Defender since MSE includes the anti-spyware engine from Windows Defender.)

To check if the computer is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

• Detects insecure versions of applications installed
• Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
• Assists you in updating your system and applications
