OK I knew she was really good with computers but didnt expect a disagreement would lead to her claiming she'd easily hacked my system, told me who I was emailing, making me wonder if she really had. now when Im writing an email in my live.com address which is the one assoc with my facebook page, the page 'jumps' frequently, imagine it as a video with minor skips in it I guess is how I can describe it best - so now Im afraid shes not only accomplished that but might do more than taunt me about it.  Im hoping you can help by looking at this gobbledygook pasted here and put my mind at ease, and thank you!

Hi, 3b.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

First things first, go to a friend or family member's computer and change all of your passwords -- making them all different.  You already have an idea of what can happen if you use the same password on every site.

Next, navigate to C:\RSIT and open info.txt.  Copy paste the remainder of the log following the Microsoft Office Proofing Tools entry.

Following that, I strongly suggest you uninstall all of the P2P software on your computer.  P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer. They have always been a target of malware writers and are increasingly so of late. P2P security measures are easily circumvented and if your P2P program is not configured correctly, you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program. Use of P2P programs can result in Identity Theft and P2P Dangers Have Not Gone Away.

With the remainder of the info.txt log, let's also see an MBAM scan.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25 . Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Thank you for the quick reply Corinne AND for pointing out something Ive only half done - I did change my passwords, but I did it from my own computer and as soon as I read your instructions I had a V8 moment of DOH!. I shall change them again tomorrow from ANOTHER computer, again, thank you.

Here is the info you requested - I actually use malwarebytes often, had done so last week before this issue arose, I was somewhat relieved that this scan turned up nothing nefarious.

Other than the P2P programs and some outdated, vulnerable software, I'm not seeing anything.  If you are referring to the mail.live.com webpage "jumping", yes, it does do that, most likely as the advertisements change.

System drive C: has 2 GB (1%) free of 234 GB -- This looks like a problem awaiting in the wings. I strongly suggest you uninstall programs no longer used.  If what you've been downloading with all those P2P programs is music, I suggest you review your collection and remove what you no longer listen to or move it to other media.

You are behind in Security updates.  Windows XP SP3 has been out for some time and support for SP2 is about to end.  After cleaning up your system, you need to install the Service Pack to ensure your computer is secure.

As to the vulnerable software, please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 15

Next, please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u17

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

Adobe Reader:  Your version of Adobe Reader is really out of date.  Unfortunately, even the current Adobe Reader has vulnerabilities.  An update is scheduled for Tuesday, 12Jan2010.  I suggest you plan on updating then.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake.  You can find HijackThis at C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\bbbduga.exe.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0b4d6b1c-d1a6-4b21-9412-cc846ebfa818} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Searchme Toolbar - {4d02e7e6-5930-4b51-b9b0-9f21b3789400} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {10834e9a-d475-4a24-ad01-f3f24f71b28e} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Shutdown/restart your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log.  Let me know if you have noticed anything else unusual.

At some point, run a full scan rather than the quick scan.  It might take an hour or so, but it will thoroughly examine your computer.

Forgive my cluelessness, but which P2P's are you referring to Corrine - I know Pando is one, I didnt think it took up that much, so there are others in there that are P2P also...no doubt they havent been used in quite a while if I cant remember.

I have Hijack this and will follow your instruction to see if anything else shows up.

Ok Corrine, Ive started the project of moving media, installed the XP updates, the java deletions and downloads are done, had HiJack this 'fix' those 4 items, havent yet replaced the Adobe and will delete Pando once Ive moved those items, Vuze wasnt listed among the add/remove programs so I must have deleted it before. Finally below is the fresh HiJack log along with the JavaRa log. I havent noticed anything new, Im still getting a SQLdumper alwert on opening that says it was either tampered with or corrupt so I nd to uninstall and rerun that (must be on my XP cd?). i appreciate your time and patience as you guide me through this!!

Hi, 3b.

There were several event log errors relating to Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer.  Perhaps if you reinstall it or, if no longer needed, uninstall it via add/remove programs that will solve the problem. Give it a try and let us know.

When you finish making some breathing room on the computer, I suggest a Disk Cleanup followed by a Defrag.

Let's do some maintenance.  The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk by searching your disk for files that you can safely delete. You can choose to delete some or all of the files.  It can also be used to clear all but the most recent System Restore point.

First, create a fresh restore point:

1.  Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore.
2.  Click Create a Restore Point, and then click Next.
3.  Name your restore point. (i.e., clean)
4.  Click the Create button.
5.  When the new restore point has been created, click Close.

Now select the files to be removed as well as all but the new restore points:
  • Click start-->Run and type cleanmgr into the run box and then click "OK".
  • Select the drive where Windows is installed (if you have more than one drive) and click "OK".
  • When the scan completes, check/uncheck desired boxes.
  • Next, please click the More Options tab at the top.
  • Click the "Clean up..." button under the System Restore section at the bottom.
  • Answer Yes to the question "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?".
  • Click OK and answer Yes[/b] again.
The disk clean up utility will remove the selected items.  When it completes, please restart the computer to properly record the changes made to the hard disk.

Next, with as few programs running as possible, run the Windows XP Defragment tool:

   1. Open My Computer.
   2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
   3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
   4. Click Defragment.

I'll get on those tomorrow Corrine. You have such a great way of doing this without making me feel utterly dense - when we're finished with my computer, could we then start on my closets?

Oh, I think we have our wires crossed.  I thought the deal was that I would help with your computer if you helped with my closets.  :rose:
