Dragging computer, Outlook Express behaving badly
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:14:36 AM »
My computer has been running very slowly. I hear a constant whirring noise all the time like there's something running or trying to run in the background. I went to the Contol Panel and uninstalled some unused programs, did a CCleaner and Noadware scan. My Norton Antivirus scans are done automatically and everything there seems fine. My husband recently updated our GPS for new maps.

Now Outlook Express is freezing up, opening emails slowly if at all and won't let me delete all emails (one at a time) from the inbox or spam folder.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, dian57.

In order for us to help you, it is important that you follow through with all of the provided instructions.  This is important in order to help you avoid further infections.

In addition to installed programs known for distributing malware, you have a number of questionable toolbars/programs that are known for having spyware/adware functionality.  For example, information regarding NoAdware and iMesh from WOT (Web of Trust):

noadware.net
imesh.com

1)  Although still shown in Program Files, iMesh does not have an uninstaller listed.  We'll deal with that later.  In the meantime, please go to add/remove programs and uninstall NoAdware v4.0.

2)  Next, you have a vulnerable version of Adobe Reader installed.  Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ or switch to an alternate PDF reader.  There are a number of open source readers available from http://pdfreaders.org/.  Others include Nitro Reader and Sumatra PDF.

Let's take care of the vulnerable Java and see what MBAM finds.

3)  Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
4)  Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20.

Select the Windows x86 Offline file from here: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u25

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

5)  Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
6)  Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The computer seems to be working faster. No more of that constant churning sound in the background.
HOWEVER, when I opened Outlook Express to read email, I have 5 of each message and cannot delete anything. The delete button doesn't do anything. I can't right click and delete. I even tried the antispam delete button to empty the antispam folder without success.

Any ideas what's going on NOW?
Dianne

Hi, Dianne.

The instructions I gave you had nothing to do with Outlook.  Let's look deeper.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  .

Now, please run ComboFix:
  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi, Dianne.

Do you have a separate Administrator account for this computer?

Personally, I would not allow any programs in the Trusted Zone.  After all, even well known sites can be the victim of an SQL injection, hidden scripts, and more. Please do the following:
  • Launch Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools  menu, and then click the Security tab.
  • Click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  • Click the yourcompany.com site, and then click Remove.

You have a number of files installed that do not have a very good reputation, being known as having characteristics of foistware, adware, trackware, and have been known to include malware.  As I am not seeing entries in add/remove programs, it is likely they came bundled with something else.  Please advise if you want any or all of the following removed:

Conduit Engine
Freeze.com
Swagbucks Toolbar
NetAssistant

Please go to http://virscan.org/ .  Upload the filepath shown below into the "File to upload & scan" box at the top of the page:

c:\windows\system32\xoujdikc.bnn

Please provide the results in your reply.

Please go here to run an on-line scan from ESET.
  • Note: It is easiest if you use Internet explorer for this scan.  (If you use an alternate browser, it will be necessary to download the ESET Smart Installer)
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

I don't think I have a separate Administrator account for my computer. It's always been just mine.

I went to the Virscan page but when I try to upload the xoujdikc.bnn file, after 2 seconds I get an error message that says it can't be uploaded. I tried 4 times with the same result each time.

I don't know what the four files (Conduit, Freeze, Swagbucks, NetAssistant) do so they don't need to stay.

Here is the ESET log:

Custom CFScript

Note: The following instructions were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

  • Please open Notepad (Click Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK).  Copy/Paste all of the text present inside the code box below:
Code: [Select]
Folder::
c:\program files\Swag_Bucks
c:\program files\Freeze.com
c:\program files\ConduitEngine
C:\Program Files\iWonEI
C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetSight

File::
xoujdikc.bnn
PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
upd_debug.exe

Driver::
c:\windows\system32\xoujdikc.bnn

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{8bdea9d6-6f62-45eb-8ee9-8a81af0d2f94}"=-
"{30F9B915-B755-4826-820B-08FBA6BD249D}"=-
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all antivirus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Sorry for the delay in my response, Corrine. I've been away at a conference.

I just tried what you asked me to do. When I first dragged the Notepad into Combofix I got an error message that said Combofix only works on OS of Vista and XP. I know I have XP so I tried again.
This time I got this error message:
NOT safe to contineu
Contents of Combofix is compromised. Download fresh copy from:
bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix.com
Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus "Virut"

What now?
And thank you SO much for you patience and help with this. I am awed by your knowlege and willingness to help.

Hi, Dianne.

You aren't going to be so awed with what I am about to tell you.  I'm afraid that I have bad news.

With ComboFix detecting Virut, that means your Windows Operating System files have become infected and there is no known reliable fix for this. In addition there are many, many other infected files. The nature of the infection is such that any attempts to remove it, with so many executable system files infected, as soon as one file is fixed, other files that are infected will almost immediately, or at the next reboot, just reinfect the files.  (See fellow Microsoft MVP Mikiemoes's article Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel?.)

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possibly become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files -- just pictures and documents. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected.

Once you backup, you need to format partitions and reinstall Windows and all other software from scratch, especially your protection software. Then install all updates for all software. DO NOT reinstall from any executable file backups you made while this PC was infected or you will just be reinstalling the infection.

For information, see Windows XP - Clean Install.

Well. I'm a little shaken. Somewhat heartsick. But optimistic.
I've backed up my personal documents and photos onto CDs.
Any idea how to back up my Favorite Site list or all my email addresses other than to write them on paper?

Thanks and I'm still awed.
Dianne

Hi, Dianne.

To export your favorites in IE8:

   1.  Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.
   2.  Click the Favorites button, click the arrow next to the Add to Favorites button, and then click Import and Export.
   3.  In the Import/Export Settings dialog box, click Export to a file, and then click Next.
   4.  Select the Favorites check box, and then click Next.
   5.  Select the folder that you want to export your favorites from, and then click Next.
   6.  By default, Internet Explorer creates a file called bookmark.htm in your Documents folder. If you want to use a name other than bookmark.htm or to store the exported favorites in a folder other than Documents, specify the new file and folder name.
   7.  Click Export. If you already have a file by the same name, Internet Explorer will ask you to replace it. Click Yes if you want replace the file or click No and type a new file name.
   8.  Click Finish.

The instructions at Outlook Express Tutorial should work for backing up your contacts in Outlook Express.  If you have a Hotmail or other web address, you can probably import your contacts there as well.

All files saved or imported.
I'm taking a deep breath and following the big purge instructions.
If you never hear from me again you'll know it didn't go well.

Thanks again, let's hope it's not farewell!
