You might want to try a repair install for Microsoft Office.  Otherwise, you will have a lot of security updates to install -- although that is still better than a reinstall.  Why not try it with one of the smaller programs that won't have security updates first.

While you're at it, you need to update Adobe Reader 8.3.0.  You can install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ .

Only after you are finished and when you are certain you won't be attempting any of the earlier System Restore points (i.e., from mid-August as referenced above), you need to remove ComboFix.  Doing so will implement cleanup procedures and also to reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note: In the event you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, the developer is accepting donations via PayPal.

You should also update to IE8, which is the highest version supported on Windows XP.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I don't use IE do I still need to update it? I've used it only once in three years or more. I have already updated Adobe Reader.

I used one of the mid August system restore points and it would not work.

I've repaired or reinstalled quite a few programs already.  I'll just do it manually. Thank you for your help.

Hi, buyorsell888.

It is advisable to apply all Important Security Updates and the update to Internet Explorer would fall into that category.

To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:
  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications

Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Again, please let me know if you have any questions.

I already have Spyware Blaster, I downloaded and installed Win Patrol and ran Secunia, there were no updates needed. Thank you, I've restored most of my program shortcuts. Appreciate your help

You're welcome!

Remember the advice by bbbluz at GW:

Quote
never click on the screen or try to X it out, always place your mouse over the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, right click, choose Task Manager then choose Applications tab, click on the application and End Task at the bottom.

Another option is to use the key combination of Alt + F4.  This will close the browser window. (When no windows are open if you press ALT + F4, it will bring up the shut down screen.)
