Security Protection Virus

Security Protection - Virus Solution and Removal

My mom has this virus on her computer and she can't open any browser to download a new anti virus software and SUPERAntiSpyware didn't detect anything. The task manager won't open either. I'm afraid to use a flash drive to move an anti virus software from my computer to her computer because I'm afraid the flash drive will then be effected.

She's using Windows Vista Home Premium.

How do I remove this virus?

Hi, Cory.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

We will do our best to assist you clean your Mom's computer.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.
Due to the numerous instructions, I suggest you print these instructions before beginning.

Although transferring programs to your Mom's computer via flash drive should not be a problem, in the event you need to download any of the programs to your flash drive and transfer them to your Mom's computer, you can install dr_Bora's program, MCShield::Anti-Malware Tool::.  This tool will block the autorun.inf, preventing any transferred infected files from automatically opening on your computer.   (Yes, I know dr_Bora.  He is a respected member of the security community and his tool is safe to use.)

1.  Please restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking. (To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter on your keyboard. Windows will now boot into safe mode with networking and prompt you to login as a user.)

2.  Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
    Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
    If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
    If you don't see file extensions, please see:  How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.  Do not use the computer during the scan!
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects[/b]" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
3.  Please download rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double-click rkill to run.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
  • Do NOT restart your computer after running rkill as the malware program(s) will start again.
Note: If you you receive security warnings about rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

4.  Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

5.  Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

6.  Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Requested logs:

TDSSKiller
Malwarebytes
Both DDS.txt and Attach.txt
checkup.txt

Note:  Due to the number of logs requested, it is likely you will need to create more than one reply in order to get all the logs posted.

Thank you very much, how exactly do you find the logs after everything is completed and closed?

Hi, Cory.  You should have received a prompt to safe the logs.  If you didn't save them, go ahead and run DDS.scr again and copy/paste the resultant log as a reply.  (Note:  if DDS ran properly the first time, you will only see the DDS.txt.  Don't worry if you don't get the Attach.txt log.)

Ok, delete the copy of DDS.scr that you downloaded and try a fresh copy:

Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs and post in your next reply.

NOTEOnly if you still have problems with DDS, do the following, being sure to allow RSIT to download HijackThis if prompted to do so:

Please download random's system information tool (RSIT):
  • Download RSIT by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    Note:  For users with 64-bit systems, please download RSIT from here.
  • Double-click RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized).
,

Take a walk through the "Security Garden" -- Where Everything is Coming up Roses!

Remember - A day without laughter is a day wasted.
May the wind sing to you and the sun rise in your heart.

Hi, Cory.

Can you surf in normal mode on your Mom's computer now rather than Safe Mode with Networking?  Please give it a try and let me know.

Old versions of Java are a major source of infection.  Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 .  Next, Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment 6u27.

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

Unfortunately, uninstalling older versions of JRE may not uninstall the Java Console for that version, causing Firefox to accumulate multiple Java Console extensions located in the Firefox > Tools > Add-ons list.
  • Make sure you already have the most recent version, Java SE Runtime Environment 6u27.
  • Go to C:\Program Files > Mozilla Firefox > extensions.
  • Delete the folders the following folders:

    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0012-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0013-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0015-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0017-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0019-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0020-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0021-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0023-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0024-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
    {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA}

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean
Please tell me how the computer is working after completing the above cleanup.

It seems to be running well with no virus notifications. Do I need to post the JavaRa log?

Hi, Cory.

No, you don't need to post the JavaRa log.  You can delete TDSSKiller, RKill, Security Check and the (failed) DDS.scr.

Having a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software are not enough.  You also need to stay current with security updates.  If you don't have your computer set to automatically install the Microsoft Security Updates, please check for updates now.

To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications, install Secunia Personal Software Inspector or, alternatively, visit http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ .  The Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:
  • Detects insecure versions of applications installed
  • Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
  • Assists you in updating your system and applications

Install and update SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

My favorite security software is WinPatrol which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html .  We also have a WinPatrol help forum here at LandzDown Forum, should you have questions about WinPatrol.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
