To regain some memory, I want to see if we can shut-down some bootup processes in favour of simply clicking them when we need them. Of course, I appreciate any analysis that reveals problems with our system, as well. Thanks.

Hi, Dan.  You have one of the best programs available for managing startup programs in WinPatrol.  Just double-click Scotty in the System Tray and a list of startup programs will be generated.  You will see that most of them are system or for your antivirus and firewall.  If Microsoft Office isn't used regularly it could be removed from startup.

Another thing to consider is that Norton is a huge memory hog.  I don't now how long your subscription is but if it is running out soon you may wish to consider another A/V software. 

The next thing is to remove all the downloaded program files (the 016 entries).  You can always download them again if they are needed.  More than likely a newer version will be needed anyway.  However, for backup, you could always transfer those files to a CD.

The next thing is to clean out temp files.  It is amazing how much space can be freed up that way, particularly if it is something that has not been done recently.  The software I prefer for my personal use is CCleaner. 

Download CCleaner v1.34.407 - Slim from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx  . 

Instructions for using CCleaner:
  • Close all open programs, including Internet Explorer, Fire Fox and any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Launch CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies.  Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
  • Then select the following items
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
      • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "System" section except Windows Log Files.
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
    • Click exit. 
    • Shutdown/restart the computer.

    Let's see what if that makes any difference in the performance.

    Thanks for the feedback. I used WinPatrol to reduce the number of startup programs, including Microsoft Office. I removed the 016 entries. I use CCleaner on a regular basis. Altogether, there has been a marginal increase in speed.

    We're stuck with Norton for now. What are the more reliable freeware anti-virus programs?
