Hi, Im relieved to find this forum since I have no clue how to look for evidence of intrusion in my computer.  I have had this desktop for a short while now; it replaced one that was hacked into.  I knew this because the person who was behind it instant messaged me about information gotten from sent emails I hadnt deleted - I tend to be very lazy about maintenance (with my car as well), and hadnt changed my passwords in ages.  Im since on this new desktop, run Norton v. 12.8.0.4, have run Yahoo spyscan regularly, use that old email acct for general correspondence only and have a new acct for which I change the passwords weekly.  I downloaded Security Task Manager for this computer, with keyboard monitor block on, because at around the time the intrusion happened, I rememberd my cpu's suddenly jumped to 100% from the usual 1-4% but I couldnt see what process was out of the ordinary, didnt recognize what it meant.  This person has attempted to contact me again thru Yahoo IM, I've ignored the contact, even opened a new ID because Im afraid of having that one open anymore in case that was an access point.

All this leads me here... having looked over the long list of forums, this one jumped out at me because I live in the Boston area and Fenway Park is on Lansdown Street (probably no connection to this forums name but clicked with me).  Im just shy of sitting in CNET's paranoic corner about now, logging in to check mail then logging out immed after so I can close the window.  Im hoping a bit of peace of mind may be visited upon me, or at least an idea what I might look for in the future if my system is broken into again.

Here is the log from the scan I just ran:

3b,
Please can you
Welcome to Landzdown we hope you enjoy your stay May I reccomend that you download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.

The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Hi, 3b.  Welcome to LzD.  LandzDown has no connection to Boston or to the Land down under (Australia), but its our home and we love it.  I'm glad the relation to Lansdown Street brought you here.

In reading your description, it sounds possible that you may have had a keylogger on the old computer.  However, there are no such signs on this computer.  I suspect that the person who IM'd you was just doing so to "get your goat".

I am happy to report that I am not seeing anything suspicious on your computer.  However, I may have missed it but are you using a firewall?  The following are free for personal use:

Agnitum Outpost Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall
Online Armor Free

You have MBAM installed now and may want to keep it updated, scanning at least once a week.  I've seen where the developer has updated MBAM three times in a day as new variants have been found.

Another favorite is WinPatrol.  WinPatrol includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

Please let us know if you need further assistance and be sure to join the LzD Birthday celebration in the Lounge.

Thank you Corrine!  Its a n awful feeling to know someones been able to sneak into your 'home' without being seen and basically rifle through your drawers.  I do have a firewall up, Norton, Ive upgraded that and am expecting the new CD this week coming.  I'll take your advice and keep the Malware updated and run regularly, Ive outfitted my yahoo avatar with armor, and I'll keep a tight rein on my goat.
I'll have to get my laptop equipped this week and run the same checks on it (hope you wont mind).

You're welcome.

No, 3b, we won't mind if you post logs for your laptop.

3b,

Just a quick query, is this Think Pad owned by you or by a Corporate body? I'm not wishing to pry but most companies will have Information Security policies in place to prevent tampering and you should check with your Information Technology Administrators before undertaking work on any machine that is not owned by you.

Thanks,

3b,

No problem. I was just trying to ensure that you didn't fall foul of any corporate policies, as it is your Thinkpad there are no issues. Having said that, I have been through your log and I have not seen anything that causes me concern other than the fact that you are one update behind on your Sun Java. Our own Corrine has written an excellent piece on updating Java in her blog, see:

Hi, 3b.  Good evening.

Sorry for the late reply.  I'm catching up after being at work all day.  I agree with Eric the Red.  I don't see any issues in your laptop log either.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
