Malware in Active X problem
« on: October 16, 2006, 03:38:38 PM »
Hello everyone,

I discovered this website today after searching on how to remove a virus or spyware that I have on my computer. This site is really helpful and I thank all the people who brought their great info.

I came across this problem last week, while visiting this webiste: xxx.theserials.com . On top of the page, there was a link saying that I needed to install some active X in order to run the page properly. I was really stupid and clicked on it. Since that day, the computer as been acting weird whenever I browse the internet. For example, I would go do a search in google, then I would get unwanted popups, or the link I clicked on, would lead me to some other website. Not porn but spyware or antivirus add or search engine.
I ran everything possible. I first started with my antivirus, Sophos, did an Adware pro run, Spybot, everything in safe mode, but still after everything was cleaned, the problem still came back.

I ran the hijackthis as suggested in the forum of this site, but do not understand much.

Could someone please help me by peaking at the log and let me know where my problem is?

Any help is really appreciated.

 :D  Hi :

I see you took my advise on the nerdhelp forums to come here; a wise decision.
However, on nerdhelp I also mentioned the Spybot forums and a visit there
reveals you have posted exactly the same thing on both forums. Based on what
the Experts here say, probably it is best if ONLY 1 "group" of Experts provide
      assistance !?

Hi & welcome. Yes, please decide whether you wish to continue here or at the Spybot Forums. :)
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

Hiya,

OK Sure no problem.

First, please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {050E311C-0A81-4168-AB8F-1423ABC1D8B0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebca.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3041D1D6-2C1A-04D8-D75E-0218D5130D78} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtuimzf.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7672BAF-E9A3-49B6-86B2-C81719A18A4C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\igkingjp.dll

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis remove the entries you checked.

Next, please restart your computer and once back into Windows delete the following files (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtuimzf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\igkingjp.dll

Please post a rescan with Hijackthis and post a new log.

Thank you for the prompt reply Spydie. I will try that tonight and will post the new hijackthis log. I actually infected 3 of my computers by accessing that website. Pretty stupid isn't it? Thank you again for all your help.

PS: your icon, is Panoramix the druide from Asterix isn't it?

Edit: Spelling.

I edited your original post to break the link to that website ... as noted, it is in the IE-Spyad database.

Hello again Spydie, I just did what you suggested on my home desktop (I do not have access to the notebook as of right now) which had the exact same problem. The problem however persist. I have run the Hijackthis again and posted it below. The "file is missing" files have been removed after ad-watch was disabled.

Hello SpyDie,

I know where the problem came from. I did not delete these 2 files after I restarted the windows and they were still present. Everything seems be ok now. Thank you for your expertise and support.
Also thank you to Mitch for pointing that out. I will definitely update the Java once the computer is clean.

I have posted the latest log below. I hope everything looks fine now.
Have a nice day.

Hiya,

That new logfile looks fine :) Since all is now well, you may wish to visit this link, which has great instructions of preventing the same thing happening again.

Also, yes the avatar is from Asterix, well spotted! Was given to me by a friend a long time ago, loved the image and used it ever since.
