NGEN.EXE?
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:08:56 AM »
Hello,

I can finally log-in, but i'm still wondering.... what's ngen.exe?

Is it a Microsoft Framework Client? Or a malware infection?

Re: NGEN.EXE?

Hi, giga_impaqt21.  There is a lot of information provided below.  Please let me know if you  have any questions.

To answer your question, NGEN stands for Native Image Generator.  ngen.exe is apart of .NET Framework.

Antivirus Software
Let's start with the first likely reason for your problems.  Having two antivirus programs not only slows down your computer but also can lead to conflicts.  You need to choose between avast and Bit Defender and uninstall the program you are not going to keep.

IObit
Now, let's talk about IObit.  Based on IOBit's past practices, I wouldn't run Advanced SystemCare 5 and/or IObit Malware Fighter on my computer.  See the following for additional information:

-- Independent Review: IObit: Trusting Your Antivirus Vendor
-- Additional Example:  IOBit are back, facing more theft allegations. This time it involves TuneUp Utilities.
Malwarebytes Topics:
-- IOBit Steals Malwarebytes' Intellectual Property
-- IOBit’s Denial of Theft Unconvincing

Registry Cleaners
Next, comes registry cleaners.  Windows is a closed source system. Developers of registry cleaners do not have the core code of Windows 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

Registry cleaners cannot distinguish between good and bad. If you run a registry cleaner, it will delete all those keys which are obsolete and sitting idle; but in reality, those keys may well be needed by some programs or windows at a later time.

Windows 7 is much more efficient at managing the registry than previous Windows versions. If you are very knowledgeable of the registry, you could use CCleaner to delete keys left over when uninstalling programs. However, these few keys will not make one millisecond's difference in performance. If you run CCleaner or any other registry cleaner and do not know precisely what you are doing, you will have problems down the road. There are no gains to be had from using a registry cleaner and the risk is great.

Forget all the "wisdom" you learned about XP. Windows 7 is not XP and does not manage the registry the same as XP.

From Microsoft at Increase PC speed: Optimize your computer, help your PC run faster:

Quote
Note: This article does not address or recommend tinkering with the registry files. Such activities can be detrimental to your computer and should only be attempted by properly trained professionals.

Also see Are registry cleaners necessary?

Should you at any time tinker with the registry, first create a backup.  See Back up the registry

Based on the above comments, in addition to removing one of the antivirus programs, I strongly advise you to uninstall the following:

Advanced SystemCare 5
IObit Malware Fighter
TuneUp Utilities 2012
TuneUp Utilities Language Pack (en-US)
Uniblue RegistryBooster

Updates Needed

Security updates have been released for the Adobe and Java software installed on your computer, addressing critical vulnerabilities.

Adobe
With Adobe Flash Player, it is necessary to update for both Internet Explorer and alternate, non-IE browsers.  Following are the FTP download links for the critical security update issued yesterday.  Download and install both version.

The current version of Adobe Reader can be obtained from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.2/en_US/

(Alternatively, you can switch to an alternate PDF reader.  There are a number of open source readers available from http://pdfreaders.org/.  Others include Nitro Reader and Sumatra PDF.  I have been using Sumatra PDF for several years.  It is much lighter than Adobe Reader and I have had no problems with it.)

Oracle Java
Oracle Java also released a critical security update yesterday.  This Critical Patch Update contains fourteen (14) new security fixes across Java SE products.

It appears that Java SE 7 is no longer in "developer preview".  Thus, you can either update to Java SE 6u31 or Java SE 7u3.  In the event you update to version 7, check installed programs because it does not appear that upgrading removes Java SE 6.

Java SE Runtime Environment 6u31
Java SE 7 Update 3

MBAM Scan
Since you already have MBAM installed, after the above steps, let's see a fresh scan with MBAM:
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thank you, uhmmm.. some freezes here and there, but it seems to respond a little more.

I'm still in the process of updating Windows. So it kinda runs 65% of the meantime.

Hi, giga_impaqt21.

If you are attempting to install a lot of updates at one time, particularly if the updates include .NET Framework, that could result in slowness.  However, with all the changes to your system with so many programs added and removed, that has likely contributed to the problem.

Let's take a look at what is in a fresh DDS.scr log now that you've removed those programs.

In addition, please download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
