Hello Digerati, always good to meet another fan of Tolkien.

Well the Sfc /scannow never flagged that it encountered anything, but I did run it three times just to be sure.

As for the Text, thats a bit of the random part, its not just the text I have typed, but names in Messenger lists, browser pages, icons,  sometimes part of the clock display. Even highlight the area where there is text will show that theres something there taking up space , but the letters remain invisible.  This problem is always slow in cropping up.  Or at least has been, you walk away for an hour, come back and then text is missing.  or Turn off the monitor for the night turn on the monitor in the morning and text is missing. Its never been instant. However once the disappearing occurs new text entered by me or sent to me via a messenger is also fully possible of disappearing. There has been one instance where most desktop text icons and the like had vanished but one icon's text had changed to a transparent black almost like a shadow of the text.

As for Safe Mode I have not dropped the system down into Safe mode yet to see if it happens in Safe mode.  Although I may drop down the system and shove it into Safe mode tonight and see if when I get on it tomorrow if the text is missing in safe mode.

The last time the interior of the Tower was cleaned was about a month ago.

Well I know with the power supply Idea I am not so lucky. As my Power supply stock pile are pretty much too old for my current Mobo.

The Ram testing I can do easily enough yank one stick and see if it effects the issue or not.  But I'll try the drivers first hopefully that will satiate the evil of my tower.  As well that should negate the last of the software possibilities.

Question from a non-hardware knowledgeable person:  What type of monitor and how old is it?  Could it be failing?  Do you have another monitor you could connect the tower to?

The Monitor is 2 years old as of last Month, Its an LCD Acer Monitor.  I don't believe it could be failing as the issue seems more Text based where as if the monitor itself was failing it should be generally everything text and open space together. As for another Monitor I have a few over at the storage shed (CRT types) I could pull out.  However at the moment I just finished the Driver update to 2.66.58 after running into a wall with it claiming failure to install PhysX. Used Driversweeper to removed all old NVida display and Physx drivers and then ran the install and so far so good, but we shall see in a few hours.

Do mean the icons themselves, or the text for the icons?

I'm still leaning towards the graphics card or driver, but certainly testing the RAM and updating drivers are cheaper alternatives. Testing with another monitor would not hurt, but a monitor does not know the difference between text and a rose. It just knows to turn this pixel red, that pixel black and that other pixel off.

I have to admit, I'm stumped and offering up only guesses. If Corrine were not already helping you, I would be sending you to a malware removal expert.

Hopefully your new driver update will hold.

Yeah I first read the prelude and trilogy in the mid 60's - been hooked ever since. Although there were a few major disappointments with the movies (Tom Bombadil for example), they did a good job. Worried about The Hobbit movie, however, because the studios closed down. We'll have to hurry up and wait for that.

I mean the text under the Icons, however with the new driver for the card, so far so good. Although I was in the same boat as you Digerati, figuring it had to be malware, as normally a display driver should have effected more than text, and should not have been causing the nice little bad image issue.

As for Tolkien I grew up with the books, and the animated movies, and the newest movies I must admit I was rather...disappointed. For Bombadil, and Glorfindel

Fingers crossed that the problem is solved!

You can delete the following tools from your desktop.  I think you may want to hold on to TFC and run it periodically to clear the temp files.

Security Check
Root Repeal
CKScanner
