I ran all of this and my Malware log says it didn't find any infections! :(

I am unable to print, unable to download or upload anything, and unable to open internet explorer when I boot normally. There is SOMETHING wrong! Any ideas??

Hi, Hi, norgechica.  You have a lot of outdated, vulnerable software on your computer that we will need to address.  First, let's see if this will help.

Download TFC by Old Timer from here (direct download):  http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
  • First, save any files as TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
More info:
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

Now let's flush your DNS cache and restore the HOSTS file and see if you can access the Internet in Normal Mode.

Please copy/paste the lines in bold below to Notepad:

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double-click flush.bat file to run it. Your computer will reboot.

Note:  For Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click flush.bat and select "Run as Administrator".

If you are still unable to access the Internet with IE, do the following:

It is very important that these steps be carried out exactly as shown otherwise the fix will not work.
If you have any questions please ask before moving on.
  • Please start Notepad and using your mouse make sure you select and copy all the information below in the Code box into your new document.
  • Then save the file as "fixme.bat" to your Desktop
  • In the drop down box for Save as type: make sure you select All Files (*.*) and keep the quotes on the name as well.  Then close the new file.
Code: [Select]
@ECHO OFF
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyOverride /f
reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable  /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
  • On Windows XP you can double-click the file to run it.
  • On Vista/Win7 you need to Right click the file and choose Run as administrator to run it.  With User Account Control on it should ask permission to run it.  Click Yes
  • This will flash a black DOS box very quickly and go away, this is normal.  Now relaunch Internet Explorer and see if you can connect to the Internet.
Let me know the results and we will proceed.

I followed all of your steps exactly as listed.

When I boot up in safemode, I can use internet explorer just fine.

When I boot up my computer normally, after I login it takes me to a black, blank screen where all I can see is my cursor.

Let me know what to try next. And thank you so much for your help!

Ok, we seem to have a communication problem.  There is a difference between

I am unable to print, unable to download or upload anything, and unable to open internet explorer when I boot normally.

and

If you are telling me that after you logon to Windows Vista in normal mode that you cannot do anything, that is a completely different story.  In the event you have a good System Restore point prior to when this began, that may work to solve the problem.  If that is not successful, you will need to do a Repair Install.  As you have SP2 installed, see those instructions at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Sorry, let me clarify.

Before I came to this forum:
When I booted up my computer in normal mode, I could open and browse in firefox, I could open excel and other microsoft office applications, etc. I could NOT open internet explorer, I could not upload or download anything, I could not print (I would push print but nothing ever happened), I could not transfer anything to or from an external hard drive.

After following your directions so far:
When I boot up my computer in normal mode, I get a blank black screen after I login.  When I boot up in safemode, I am able to run internet explorer and follow your directions.

I will try to next suggestion you gave and let you know. Thank you!

I went to the repair vista link you posted, and it said to run RegistryBooster first.  Registry booster found 309 System Related Errors (high), 268 User Related Errors (high) and 0 Third Party Related Errors.

I pressed the button to "fix errors" but it says I have to purchase Registry Booster. What should I do?

I take it there was no joy with System Restore, correct?

I'll have a chat with the site owners of that site.  The link you clicked was for a paid advertisement, not the tutorial.  The tutorial is

Quote
Repair Install For Vista
How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista
Published by Brink
08-27-2007

Since you may need to do a repair install, before you do that, let's take a chance and try one more thing.  Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  How to disable your security applications.

Now, please run ComboFix:
  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

You are correct, I had no luck with System Restore.

I downloaded ComboFix and followed your instructions. I thought I had all my antivirus turned off, but ComboFix popped up a prompt saying my Windows Live OneCare was still running and I needed to disable it. I followed your link and instructions for disabling it.

I tried to open and disable but I got an error from Windows Live OneCare saying "The Windows Live OneCare service is not working or has been stopped. To correct this problem, try restarting your computer. If the problem continues, click below to get help." (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2284591)

I clicked the link for help and followed their instructions, which included starting and restarting, setting back my system clock and date, deleting a certificate, and restarting, etc.

Their instructions did not fix my problem, and I am still unable to run Windows Live OneCare, delete it or disable it in any way. (However, when I start Windows in regular mode, I now have a normal desktop screen and I can browse with firefox and open microsoft office applications, but I can still not print or open internet explorer, or the control panel to delete Windows Live OneCare.)

So I told ComboFix to proceed anyway.  I will post the ComboFix Log in the next reply, as well as the HijackThis log.

Well, how about that!  ComboFix is indeed a miraculous tool and its creator a genius!

Now that you can operate in normal mode, please do the following in the order presented.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall Uniblue.  In addition, you have a vulnerable version of Adobe Acrobat on your computer.  If you have a valid license, you need to update it as soon as possible.  If not, I strongly advise that you uninstall it.

You also need to update to Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ or switch to an alternate PDF reader.  There are a number of open source readers available from http://pdfreaders.org/.  I've been using Sumatra PDF for some time and have found it very effective.

Next, in normal mode, please, let's see an updated MBAM scan:
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here on Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt and C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
Following that, please do the following:

Custom CFScript

Note: The following instructions were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

  • Please open Notepad (Click Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK).  Copy/Paste all of the text present inside the code box below:
Code: [Select]
KillAll::

File:
BIT7F3E.tmp
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all antivirus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When I restarted again in regular mode, I got the black screen with only my cursor. :( I tried three times with no luck.

In safemode I am unable to find Uniblue on the list of programs to uninstall. Any other suggestions?

Go ahead and run ComboFix, post the log and let me know if there is any change. (The script is written so that it will disable your antivirus software.)
