Runs nothing not even root repeal
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:51:34 PM »
Trying to help friend with laptop. She has Windows Vista Home Basic. It ran all the other tools via flash drive, but when I try to do root repeal it goes into this viscious cycle of "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and then starts over again and again and again. Even in safe mode. Here is what I was able to get.

This event is generated when a logon session is created. It is generated on the computer that was accessed.

The subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The logon type field indicates the kind of logon that occurred. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The New Logon fields indicate the account for whom the new logon was created, i.e. the account that was logged on.

The network fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
   - Logon GUID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate this event with a KDC event.
   - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
   - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
   - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

Hi, Debra.

Can the computer connect to the internet -- either in normal mode or Safe Mode with Networking?  If so, please download and update MBAM that way.  Otherwise, you will need to download the installer and transfer it via USB.  Separately download the latest update from here http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp and manually install it.

MBAM instructions:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

It wouldnt give me a chance to do anything. It kept restarting and wouldnt read anything in windows explorer. So, I had to do a factory system restore. I went ahead and re-ran all the programs and posted logs. What is my next step?
This is what it said when I ran root repeal

Hi, Debra.

Since  you did a factory restore, is the error with RootRepeal the only problem now -- other than a critical need to get things updated?

That's right... the only problem now is the error with RootRepeal.

Hi, Debra.

Don't worry about the RootRepeal error since you did a factory restore.  The instructions for bypassing it don't matter now.  Just delete RootRepeal from the desktop.

The next step is to take care of all of the updates -- both security and third-party.

Adobe Flash Player

Direct download for IE:  http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Direct Download for non-IE (Opera, Firefox etc): http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

After install, verify Flash Player version for each browser installed at About Flash Player page.

Adobe Reader

Update Adobe Reader

Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/
Be sure to UNCHECK the optional Free McAfee® Security Scan Plus offered with the download.

Oracle SunJava

To to add/remove programs and uninstall Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u23

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

Security Updates

Because of the factory restore, all of the security updates need to be installed.  The best way to do this is to set Automatic Updates to either Download and let me choose or Check for Updates but let me choose.  Then install the updates a few at a time.  If asked to restart the computer, do so since that is necessary in order to have the update properly installed.  Trying to do too many at one time is not a wise move.  In addition, you should probably do the Important updates first and then the Optional updates later.

Note that SecurityCheck log showed both the Service Pack and Internet Explorer out of date.  However, you need to get any prerequisites installed first, thus the recommendation to do a few at a time.  (You can also remove SecurityCheck now.)

Please let me know if you have any questions.
