Slow computer
« on: August 26, 2010, 08:45:53 PM »
Stepdaughter asked me to take a look at her computer, but 2 or 3 years have passed since I left the internet. That is way too much water under the bridge, so I am requesting a little help from the experts here. She says the computer is running slow and is experiencing a problem with popups as well. It had an outdated version of NOD antivirus that had not been updated in about two years! I have removed that and will be installing the latest version of NOD after the dust settles from the cleanup here. I am using a different computer for all communications here and any downloads that may be needed. I prefer not to connect to the net with her system unless I have to, during the cleanup. The only thing that I have done is remove the outdated version of NOD, and remove SpywareBlaster and SuperAntiSpyware which were equally neglected. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, V_V!

In addition to all of the P2P programs (lecture to follow that you can pass along to her), your stepdaughter's computer is really out of date!

Software Updates Needed

You will want to do the following Adobe updates after the computer is reconnected to the internet:

Update Adobe Reader

1.  Go to add/remove programs and uninstall Adobe Reader
2.  Install the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/
or
3.  Switch to an alternate PDF reader.  There are a number of open source readers available from http://pdfreaders.org/.

Adobe Flash Player

Direct download for IE:  http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Direct Download for non-IE (Opera, Firefox etc): http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

After install, verify Flash Player version for each browser installed at About Flash Player page.

(Uninstaller of previous version:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html )

The next step, if you haven't done it before, is to lock down the Flash Player.  Here's a good tutorial:  How to configure your Flash Player settings for maximum privacy and security.

Java:

Let's take care of the vulnerable Java and see what MBAM finds. First, go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java(TM) 6 Update 13
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

1)  Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.  (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
2)  Note:  Since the computer currently isn't connected to the internet, you can download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 21 later.

Download Link: Java SE Runtime Environment 6u21

Note:  UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update.  They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

3)  Download TFC by Old Timer from here (direct download):  http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
  • First, save any files as TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
More info:
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

4)  Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here on Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt and C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply and a fresh HijackThis log.
5)  Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop (or launch from the TrendMicro Folder)
  • Select "Do a system scan and save the Logfile"
  • When the scan is completed, Notepad will launch with the log. Please UNcheck Word Wrap in Notepad (Click Format > UNcheck Word Wrap)
Include the MBAM and HijackThis logs in your reply.

Let me know how her computer is now.

Hi Corrine,

Keeping in mind that I am not very familiar with this computer, it seems faster to me. Also note that I couldn't update MBAM since the computer isn't online. Database version was 4052 and I know 4054 was available. And now, 4489 is available.  I will rerun it after I get the computer back online. Here are the logs for it and HijackThis.

Since it is an oldie, MBAM had no problem removing the Need2Find toolbar, which was likely the source of the pop-ups.  The toolbar is installed by Kazaa.  (Its time to give her the P2P lecture. :) )

I would say it is safe to connect the computer to the internet now, update MBAM and run a fresh scan, just to be sure.  Then proceed with the Adobe and Java updates.

Note, also that, support has ended for Windows XP SP2 so it is necessary to update the computer to SP3.  See Learn how to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

Don't forget to replace ESET or install one of the "free for personal use" A/V programs.  I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on one of my computers and like it a lot.

avast! 5 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Microsoft Security Essentials

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Corrine, for your help with this. I have already downloaded a fresh version of NOD for her system. Just didn't want to install anything until you thought it was good to go.

I will complain about the obvious lack of thought for anything even resembling a security thought coming from her, but I am afraid it isn't going to help much. :(
The only reason the system even had the old version of ESET's antivirus was because of problems she had about three years ago. I cleaned it up for her, installed a few programs, gave her the "you can't do that" speech. You know the drill. The only things that even got updated were the ones set to automatic.

Family or not, I told her that I wasn't into this kind of thing anymore and that you and all of the other people who so unselfishly give their time willingly, just don't have the spare time to keep cleaning up a system for someone who shows no incentive to take care of her computer. More to computers than a facebook account. Maybe, she will take the hint this time. OK, rant off.

Once again, I really appreciate your help! :flowers: Take care and ,as always, Best Wishes
VV

We're always happy to help, most particularly our long time friends!  :rose:

With the old Java software off her computer, she'll be ok with the new version as it actually has a proper update mechanism!  Perhaps if you installed Secunia PSI on her computer she would be reminded of updates.  Bleeping Computer just published a tutorial for Secunia PSI:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial174.html.  You can find Secunia PSI at http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/.

Hi,

Just an update.

Did all of the things you recommended in earlier posts. Updateded and reran MBAM. Got one additional hit which I did remove. From the log file:

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Spyware Remover (Rogue.PALSpywareRemover) -> No action taken.

Ran updated NOD32 and it complained about 3 things.

C:\Documents and Settings\Billy\Shared\Eighties classic.wma - WMA/TrojanDownloader.Wimad.K trojan - cleaned by deleting - quarantined [1]
C:\Program Files\DownloadManager\p2pinst.exe - probably a variant of Win32/Agent.LNPVKMP trojan - cleaned by deleting - quarantined [1]
C:\Program Files\DownloadManager\p2pl.exe - probably a variant of Win32/Agent.LNPVKMP trojan - cleaned by deleting - quarantined [1]

Not at all sure if the 2 download manager files aren't just false positives. Will sort that out later.

Now I have to go get real friendly with the Windows Update button. NOD32 informs me that there are 96 missed updates.

Thanks again.
VV

Hi, VV.

p2pl.exe & p2pinst.exe are both part of Media Pipe which is described as follows:

Quote
Description of : MovieLand Media Pipe is a movie downloader that provides users an access to adult- related materials for 3 days. It downloads and displays ads and popups causing your browser to slow down.

Since neither program is showing in the install list, I suspect it was a stealth install.

As to the MBAM hit, I recommend you scan again and this time select it for removal.  See PALSpywareRemover.

Thanks for the additional info. On my old system I had everything bookmarked for ease of finding info, but as you may very well guess, no such markers here. With this system being so far out of date, it hasn't left much spare time for searching out info.

As to the MBAM find, I did remove it. I just showed you the entry from the scan before it was removed. Thanks for the confirmation on that entry!

Best wishes,
VV
