Uniblu Registry Booster says I have 207 errors
« on: October 02, 2011, 09:25:03 PM »
They want me to purchase their cleaner to fix the errors.  I've been advised NOT to do that.  What I can do to correct these errors?

Hi, Sheila.

You received excellent advice!  I am so very, very glad you asked instead of purchasing the program.  Too many people have ended up with serious computer problems after running that software!  You are fortunate that the report you received had only 207 errors noted.  Others have been scared into purchasing the software because there were many hundreds in the report.

Windows is a closed source system. Developers of registry cleaners do not have the core code of Windows and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

Registry cleaners cannot distinguish between good and bad. If you run a registry cleaner, it will delete all those keys which are obsolete and sitting idle; but in reality, those keys may well be needed by some programs or windows at a later time.

If you are very knowledgeable of the registry, you could use CCleaner to delete keys left over when uninstalling programs. However, these few keys will not make 1 millisecond's difference in performance. If you run CCleaner or any other registry cleaner and do not know precisely what you are doing, you will have problems down the road. There are no gains to be had from using a registry cleaner and the risk is great.

See this article from Microsoft:  Are registry cleaners necessary?

Are you having problems with your computer?

Nothing major, just a general slowing down.  When I had an installer here setting me up with Hi Speed service, he said my computer should be faster, but it had some 'issues', he didn't elaborate.   I've had this Toshiba Satellite for about five years, the first 4 1/2 being on dial-up service!  So his comment about 'issues' didn't really bother me.  When I got the report from Uniblu, THAT got my attention.

Hi, Sheila.

Having spent many years on dial-up, I know exactly what you mean.  I have a "lite" broadband connection now.  It isn't the fastest but is a bit more affordable and certainly beats dial-up!

I looked at your previous thread.  It shows you have a 75 GB hard drive which is 50% free.  There are a few things you can do, starting with looking to see if there are old programs you are no longer using and uninstall them.

Next, to clean temp files, download TFC by Old Timer from here (direct download):  http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
  • First, save any files as TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
More info:
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

After that, even though it should be scheduled, it couldn't hurt to run the Disk Defragmenter.  (Just start typing Disk in the search box.)

Let me know if any of that helps.

Hi Corrine.  I'm back!  I've printed your instructions and read thru them again.

I went to Uninstall to look at the programs list.  There are programs that came installed on this system that I don't use.  Years back when I queried a friend about removing them, I was told to 'leave well enough alone' and I have.

To name some of them,  there are three Apple programs, why??? a  program called Bonjour...no clue what that is, unless it's a program my granddaughter put on here last Spring.  There are two listings for Google, two listings for Real Tek, Quick Time,  a Texas INstruments program,  many Toshiba programs and I can't even get updates from Toshiba...always get an error message.   .

For now, I'll  download TFC and get started.  Back to you later.  sk

Here's the uninstall list from February that you posted, with the Security Updates & Microsoft Office/.NET Framework removed from the list since you don't want to remove them.  I know Adobe Reader was updated back then as well so we'll ignore the version information.

We can take a closer look at this if you wish.

OK, I ran the TFC, also did the Defrag.  I have history set to clean out regularly.

After comparing the Feb Uninstall list with the current one...I'm puzzled.  February list doesn't have the three Apple listings, nor Bonjour.    Could the Apple Programs & Bonjour be part of the satellite system I now use with my new internet server?

Yes, Bonjour is used for automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks.  Bonjour Print Services is probably also installed.

Apple Quick Time is media player (very persistent on being in Start Up):  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/what-is/

Is your computer running any faster?
