Winchester and Corrine,

Thanks again for all your help.

I now have the following security softwares installed and/or activated.  Are any of these duplicative so that they should be uninstalled or deactivated?

Avira
Spyware Blaster
jv16 Power Tools
Crap Cleaner
Malware Bytes Anti-Malware
Win Patrol Plus
Windows Defender
Windows Firewall

Hi, Ken.

With CCleaner, unless you know what you are doing, only use the cookie/temp file portion, not the registry.  Also, do not check any of the boxes in the "Advanced" section on the Windows tab.

I missed that you have jv16 PowerTools 2010 installed.  jv16 Power Tools is a registry cleaner and the 2010 version is not compatible with Windows 7.

Although there are times when a registry cleaner such as CCleaner or jv16 Power Tools will solve a problem, I do not advise using unless you know what you are doing and won't repeat my "lecture" again.

Other than that, I think you are fine.  Keep in mind with Spyware Blaster that you will need to update it periodically.  You could consider using Secunia (described earlier) or follow the updates by subscribing to the topics (see Stay Current -- Subscribe to the Update Topics for your system software!).

Thanks again Corrine.

You may have noticed that I bought the Win Patrol Pro.  Do you have any suggestions on using it?  It's pretty comprehensive.

I certainly did see that you have WinPatrol PLUS!  WinPatrol has long been a personal favorite.  It is more of a system monitor.  For example, when you install a new software program and the installer asks if you want it added to "Start up" and you UNcheck that box but the program ignores your request, you can use WinPatrol to remove it from Start up.  See Start Up Programs: Remove, Add, Disable.

Another option I particularly like is "Delayed Start".  See Delayed Start.

Prevent Internet Explorer Browser Hijacks is another nice feature.

Since you now have WinPatrol PLUS, if there is something on your computer you aren't familiar with, you can check the PLUS Knowledgebase.

The developer, Bill Pytlovany, provides e-mail support for WinPatrol and, of course, our WinPatrol forum here is available for questions and help.

Thanks Corrine,

I thought I would mention a little about Crap Cleaner.  One of my sons is a computer tech and suggested I use it to keep my cookies cleaned out.  It has a "smart" cookie scanner that will retain "good" cookies and clean out the rest, at least according to him.  I just downloaded it a couple of months ago, so I'm not that familiar with it yet.  He strongly advised against the registry scanner too, like you.

I'm going to tell him how much help you and Winchester were in case he ever needs some help.  He's pretty knowledgable, but not the types of issues you two know.

Cheers!!!!

I use CCleaner myself, and recommend it for cookie management.   :D

You can get some helpful hints on how to use it here:  http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/help

Winchester or Corrine,

Winchester, thanks for the additional info on CCleaner.

Different question:  I have been reloading some of the URL's to my Password Manager that didn't get restored from my portable version.  While I was in one of the websites, I was trying to do a search for a topic and got a notification bar that it needed an addon and referred me to Internet Options.  I found a Java addon (Java Plug-in 2 SSV Helper) that had been disabled on 1-11-12.  Don't know if this is the addon I need, but is it safe to ebable it?

Hi, Ken.

I checked an earlier DDS log and the "BHO" (Browser Hijack Object) is for the current version of Java so, yes, you can enable the Java Plug-in 2 SSV Helper.  However, you can also check that file with WinPatrol PLUS.
  • Right-click on Scotty in the system tray to launch WinPatrol, selecting "IE Helpers".  (Windows Vista and Windows 7 Users: Accept any UAC Prompts)
  • Look at the name column for Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U2, with JP2SSV.DLL as the description.  (You can also click the Info button at the bottom of that window to read the PLUS Knowledgebase information about it.)
  • If the Java item is not on the list, go ahead and add the plug-in via IE.  However, if it is already listed in WinPatrol, you'll know that isn't what the website is looking for and I would be curious about what the site thinks is needed.

Thanks Corrine,

I checked Win Patrol and most of the feedback on that was positive so I enabled it.  I still got the add-on message on the forum where I was doing the search so I sent an email to the moderator asking if he/she knows what add-on I might need.
