Another update:

I took it upon myself to go ahead and burn the disk since I had that option with the tool used to create the bootable USB. Win7 Home Premium has been reinstalled. Windows has updated, MSE has installed and is up to date, firewall, system restore all ok, and so far everything is going great. Had to install/update some drivers to get the wireless function to work, but so far so good.

I do have 3 issues that I believe I messed up on.

1st: DISKPART refused to obey when I tried to type in "0". Though I proceeded. A folder called Windows.old was created and I deleted after Windows was installed. Not sure I should have done that.

2nd: Everytime I boot the laptop I have to chose which Windows 7 OS to choose from as if it is a dual boot. Not sure how to fix that or if I can without reinstalling again. But I will if I have to.

3rd: Bryan is not happy because his webcam that he uses to contact his daughter with while he is at Military training is not functional. Not sure how to fix that either.

I apologize for getting ahead of those who are giving so much of their time in helping me. I can always go back and start over if necessary.

Your advice and guidance from here is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Donna

Hi, Donna.

I wish you had waited to delete Windows.old.  The files that were used in the original install were stored in the Windows.old folder, although the type of files in this folder depends on your computer.   Certainly, caution is needed when restoring files from Windows.old.

Can you go to the vendor site to get the software for the webcam?

Donna excuse me for butting in but if you now have a dual boot it sounds to me as if you didn't format the hard drive before installing the new system. I am sure this will give you problems in the future. You may well find it better to bite the bullet now A carry out a format and install. Just my HO

I am sorry I took it upon myself to delete that folder. I assumed that the folder contained the files from the corrupt reinstall that I had performed 3x's with the recovery disks that did not work.

@ MikeW:

Mike, you can butt in anytime you like. Your advice/opinion is very welcome. I did ask a fella who owns and operates a Tech Shop on my route today about that and he said it is because the MBR was not wiped when I installed from the disk. (or something like that)

Anyway, this is where I stand:

Called ASUS to see about the software for the Webcam. They told me there is a way to access the hidden recovery partition by pressing F9 on reboot. I told them that I did try to use the recovery disks created from that hidden partition and they were corrupt. He said there is no way that partition could be corrupt and the registry would be fixed and back to as was from factory, so I tried what he said. Once the process was complete and I found myself right back where I started from before I installed the OS from the disk I created with Goldens instructions (which worked perfectly fine except for the 3 issues I posted above) I called ASUS back to tell them they were wrong and the partition is corrupt. They want me to send the laptop to them though they could not give a price on how much it would cost to fix it till a representative looked at the laptop. The nice man wasn't too happy with me when I said it should be free since I was told there was no way that hidden partition was corrupt and it should have reverted back to as was from the factory yet it wasn't which means the partition was corrupt when it left the factory.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to do now. Send it back and take a chance on having to pay big bucks or just reinstall again with the disk I made from Goldens instructions.

From what my son told me, in order for the Webcam to work you have to have Skype installed or go to a site with video chat. Honestly, I've never tinkered with a Webcam so I don't know. Maybe it did work but since Skype was removed from the reinstall........

Your honest opinions are most welcome.

Thank you all!

PS: Oh Corrine. You're not going to believe this. Bryan's XP Home Edition is infected with Windows XP Security 2012. I told him he was not bringing it to me that he had to register here as a member and do it himself.

Its a shame you can't send him to his room and take away his computer privileges for a month.

Oh how I would love to!

I have contacted Best Buy. They did tell me that I can access the ASUS website to install whatever I need if I choose to go ahead and use the disk I created from Golden's instructions. They also stated that they would order the Factory Restore disk for me since the recovery disks created from the image restore are obviously corrupt, though it may cost around $20.

Funny, ASUS told me they do not have Factory Restore disks and I had to send the laptop to them.

I'll post back when all is accomplished.

Corrine, winchester73, Golden & MikeW......I can't thank you enough for going beyond the call of duty to help us out.

Donna :)

Hi,

It sounds as if the BIOS doesn't hve a "boot from USB" function, so yes, burn it to a dvd instead, and then boot from that to install Windows 7.

Regards,
Golden

Hi everybody,

Wanted to let you know we have had success with getting Bryan's laptop formatted with the ISO that Golden gave me instructions for. I believe I mentioned above that I ended up having to burn the ISO to disk because there was no option to boot from USB.

All updates are complete, drivers, programs from MS and those from the ASUS site that he wanted to keep are re-installed. AV, MBAM, SpywareBlasters, Adobe Flash Player, FoxIt Reader, Java, etc. All downloaded and installed with no problems. The webcam even works.

Corrine, you put a lot of time into helping me get that laptop up and running. Thank you. Golden, thank you for the guidance you provided. Winchester73, MikeW....thank you all.

@ Corrine,

I had no idea that this family of rogues had the ability to detect what OS was installed on the machine it was going to infect. Incredible!!!! One size fits all malware. Kinda scary really. What's next?

Bryan has decided to put his XP that is infected with WinXP Security 2012 back into the closet till he can find an XP disk to just reinstall. You have no idea how badly I'd love to get a hold of that computer and use as a lab rat.

Donna :)

Hi Mike,

I forgot to mention, I ended up having to format the HD with DBAN. For some reason that is the only way I could wipe that drive clean.

Your post made me think of that.

Thanks!  :)

Hi, Donna.

It was certainly an experience for us all!  I'm glad Bryan finally has his laptop back and in working order -- and don't blame you for wanting to have a go at the XP machine.

My thanks to Golden as well.
