anti-malware only
« on: September 12, 2008, 06:02:10 PM »
hello.

this is not a question about anti-virus or online-scanners.

i've seen ya'll mention Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

what happened to
spybot search and destroy
adaware?

now... i use spybot s&d... so... how do the other 2 stack up?

are there any other anti-malware products i can carry around with me for those whose internet access has been trashed?

any good root kit detectors?

I stopped using Ad-Aware several years ago.  From what I've heard, the download is huge and it requires a service to run and update.  That may not be ideal in the severe situation you seem to be describing.

For a normal travel kit for analytical purposes, I would include WinPatrol Flash:  http://winpatrolflash.com/ (The WinPatrol USB Wristband is "neat" too.)

    * Disable Un-Needed Automatic Windows Services
    * Remove Annoying Toolbars and BHO's
    * Create Reports that provide a snapshot of potential problems
    * Disable ActiveX Controls & MORE!

However, for "those whose internet access is trashed" sounds pretty severe.  How about UBCD4Win http://www.ubcd4win.com/verhistory.htm  Another option for the unbootable is BartPE http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ .

The reason I like MBAM is because is not a huge download, it updates frequently and has been fantastic with the current infections.

You can carry Windows Defender with you - just be sure to grab current sigs from http://www.microsoft.com/av if where you're headed doesn't have Internet access.

I also like and keep handy superantispyware, there is a free version. I use it now instead of ad aware and spybot, I also use Mbam.

it is a very good program.

I know you said antimalware only but I like these for loading on a flash drive.
