compare active/real time protection programs
« on: February 19, 2006, 06:53:16 PM »
Hi Friends,
I recently installed the trial version of ewido.  At the point during install, when choosing active protection and auto updates, I deselected them.  I have Spybot S&D, and I'm thinking it has some sort of real time feature (Tea Timer?).  And I have heard it's not too good to have 2 real-time or active anti-anything, enabled at the same time.  (No 2 firewalls, no 2 AVs, etc.)  Plus, I'm planning to get Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard pretty soon, and it's Spyware Guard, I believe, that provides some active protection, if I'm not mistaken.

So this brings up a question for me -- which of the spyware/malware programs offers the best real-time or active protection?  Do they work differently?  What do they "watch" for, as they actively protect?  Do they target different, or more, or fewer types of malware?  What's a girl...er, uh, woman...er , oh yeah -- person!  What's a person to choose, as far as real-time/active malware protection?  Not sure if it matters, but this would be for XP sp2, IE6 sp2.

Brynn :)

Ewido´s real time protection feature is disbaled after the trial period. The scanner will continue to work as usual.
Another one, one of the best $$$-choices is CounterSpy : http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm
It has also a trial period, *but* it wont allow you to download updates of the definitions after that.

I used to have both Ewido and Microsoft´s AS installed at the same time , they didn´t conflict. But in general you´re right, keep only one.
If you keep Ewido and SpyWare Guard you have a strong protection.
Of course together with a firewall and AV.

Hi again :)
Thanks for your comments Die Hard.
Well, now I have Spybot S&D's Tea Timer and SpywareGuard, for real-time protection.  Although, now that I have SpywareGuard, I'm not sure I need it  :?   As mentioned in previous replies, I realize I shouldn't have them both enabled, at the same time.  But I'm not sure which one is best, or how to decide which to disable.  So I guess I have 3 Q's:

-- Between Tea Timer and SpywareGuard, which offers better protection (assuming updates are current on both)?
-- Among all the freeware/donationware real-time spyware programs, which is best?
-- Among all real-time spyware programs, free and not free, which is best?

Or, are they all pretty much alike, like firewalls in that they generally all do the same thing?

Thanks, appreciate any comments and/or opinions :)

 :rose:
i had the EXACT same question.
spywareguard seems to have been giving me great protection, but i wondered if:
1) it's BAD to have that AND TEA-TIMER on,
 and
2) if i have to choose one, which is better?  (currently, i only run SG)

Well, personally, I decided to keep using only Tea Timer, until we get some clarification on this.  By which statement I do not mean as a challenge of any sort -- just sharing my choices ;)

From the lack of response to this Q, I'm beginning to think they must all be quite similar.  But hopefully, one of the many wise and celebrated professionals who volunteer their expertise here at LzD, will clarify this for us   :sos:
