Have you tried A.V.G 8.0 Free ?
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:26:23 AM »
Hi
I just replaced A.V.G 7.5 Free with the new A.V.G 8.0 Free on my wife´s PC yesterday.
 :gwave:
It seams to run well  :D

We are surprised that it now do link-scan and make search results green (and perhaps red also, but until now we have not found any)

Do you know about the scanner-technical ??

We said "No" to install "the security search bar" (or what it was called), when A.V.G 8.0 free was installed.

But I sort of regret it - Because I would like to have seen it (my wife don´t care).
Do you know this "bar" ??

Greetings
Mr. Dan.Mark

It's simply a Yahoo Search Bar. (works in the same way as Google toolbar etc. do, but I imagine AVG get something out of the customers installing the toolbar and using it)

I haven't tried AVG 8, but I've seen screenshots and the GUI is totally revamped. Looks nice.
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

... It works fine, and my wife are pleased with it. :2cents:

So, it was Yahoo! Thanks for telling! - I really did wonder if we said "No" to something we would have said "Yes" to.
(But I did ask my wife)
- Well in that case it was good we said "No".
... I did once  install Yahoo Search Bar, when I installed CCleaner (as far as I remember - forgot to un-mark).
And it was difficult to erase the "bar" again.

It is a bit more than the Yahoo search bar, but with IE7 and other mechanisms that don't cripple the computer as many people have reported.

LinkScanner is a new security component included in the AVG 8.0 Free Edition, which provides the Search-Shield functionality. Its purpose is to scan all results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN), and provides you with an evaluation of a safety level of each found website. At the same time, the LinkScanner also checks all Internet addresses typed into the address bar of your browser, or linked on other websites.

If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:
  • Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
  •   Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
    •   save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
    •   open menu Start -> Run
    •   type

                c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch [/list]
    •   The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

Even resellers of AVG recommend against the LinkScanner because it slows the computer to a crawl.

      - Many thanks for that informations and the link.
Well, so far my wife did not feel difference in speed. But it is good to have the informations, if it feel like slowing down !
      And it can be removed.

      - Another thing is:
It only show green links - So we are not any wiser !
      (Might as well not "warn")

      - Or perhaps did not search for something "danger" ???

      Hej Dan.Mark :)

      http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ie.html
      Avast! Antivirus 6.0.1000 Home Version
      Comodo Firewall
      SuperAntiSpyware Pro

      Hej stealthzone

      Tak for velkomsten, samt Siteadvisor.
       :)
Den nye AVG virker umiddelbart mere overskuelig og "pænere" i designed.
Om den scanner bedre skal jeg ikke kunne sige - Men go´er den.
