Hello, davcho      not sure but I think it might have something to do with  TrueVector service running in the back ground thus, you cant install the update till you kill that service first , can you try this please and see if its causing the problem …also "Process Explorer" might be helpful
In finding out if it running in the back ground .. then if it is running can you follow the instructions below to kill it …

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

I don't think you realized it, but you have windows fire wall running also ,
You can locate the  "Security Center" from Start > Control Panel and turn off the Windows Firewall from there.

If you used the built-in uninstaller for ZoneAlarm, the TrueVector service was not disabled and removed. This can result in loss of network access. To prevent that service from causing the same problem in the future, follow the steps below.

To disable TrueVector at startup:
1.   Click Start >Control Panel (Windows XP), or Start >Settings >Control Panel (all other versions of Windows).
2.   Open the Services tool as described below:

(Classic View) Double-click Administrative Tools. Then, double-click Services.(Category View) Click Performance and Maintenance. Then, click Administrative Tools and double-click Services.
d. Double-click on the entry named TrueVector Internet Monitor.
e.Select Disable from the Startup Type drop-down menu.
f. Close the Services Control Panel.

To properly uninstall ZoneAlarm:

To correctly uninstall ZoneAlarm, use the Add and Remove Programs control panel. Also, for Windows NT, 2000, and XP, you must first disable the True Vector Service (Steps 1 and 2, below).

1.   Click Start, then Run.
2.   Type net stop "TrueVector Internet Monitor" just as it appears then press OK.
3.   Click Start >Control Panel (Windows XP), or Start >Settings >Control Panel (all other versions of Windows).
4.   Click Add or Remove Programs.
5.   Click on the entry for ZoneAlarm.
6.   Click Change/Remove to uninstall the program.
7.   Restart your system..

numbnuts - about the window firewall, i'd did turn if off before i install zonealarm as you described. Strange to find it running though :? Anyway, i've disable it in services & it's not running anymore :)

As i've written in my post above, i couldn't find zonealarm in the add/remove program in control panel. So, should i just delete the files in C:/Program Files/Zonealarm???

Hello, Davcho yes go ahead and remove them files..

Then I would do a system search to find ZoneAlarm
And remove every thing it finds then do it again to remove it from the bin
Then reinstall ZoneAlarm   after a reboot..
