need Spybot TEA-TIMER help !
« on: February 28, 2006, 05:01:42 AM »
:rose: ok, i need to choose a Spybot TEA-TIMER option, but I CAN'T because my button choices AREN'T COMPLETELY VISIBLE.
- i'm going to describe what's going on, and what screens TT presents me with, and ask WHAT'S IT SAY IN THE BOXES. (cuz i can't SEE 'em).
 :exorcize: here goes.
i'm using HijackTHIS to fix a problem (i'll post a link below, for further explanation).
FOR SOME REASON, each time i turn on T-Timer, it UNDOES the change.
this is what i SEE when i launch T-Timer -- and somebody PLEASE tell me which box to check to ALLOW the change to go through.
** i launch T-Timer, and this is EVERYTHING it says. (sorry for including the whole thing; i'm doing it to avoid confusion over what i'm asking) --

"spybot has detected an important registry entry that had been changed"
category: system startup global entry
change: value deleted
entry: Windows Defender
Old date: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSAS

OK, THIS is what I can only PARTIALLY SEE. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE OPTIONS ARE:
starting on the far left, moving to the right:
a button (i can't read what it says) - a question mark - an info button - (and, on the far right:) another button with slight blue shading inside

 - and underneath: a "remember this decision" box

***my question is IF I WANT T-TIMER to ALLOW THIS CHANGE, DO I CLICK THE BUTTON TO THE FAR LEFT, OR FAR RIGHT?

i tried making this as clear as i can. if you're interested why i need to do this, click:

"Allow Change" is on the far left, "Deny Change" is on the far right.

Hi babyoh,
Quite some time ago, maybe almost 2 years ago, I had simultaneously several spyware "bugs", along with a couple of viruses.  Working with another forum to clean up this mess, they were unable to eliminate one of them...I think it was a virus, but don't remember for sure.

Frustrated, I took the problem to the old Lavasoft forums, where I was instructed to disable Tea Timer, before fixing with HijackThis.  Once HT effectively removed the problem, I could then re-enable TT.  There was a long sequence of scans, restarts, Safe Mode, restarts, etc.  And unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what they were (and the Lavasoft forums are gone now, so can't look it up).  But it was a sequence that had to be followed precisely.

So, I don't know if this will help you or not.  But I just wanted to make the comment that TT sometimes interferes with HT removing a bug.  Once I followed the instructions given in the Lavasoft forums, I was rid of the bug for good!

Good luck

Correct ...

This has lots of pictures:  http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

When you exit Teatimer, it takes a snapshot of the registry keys it is monitoring ... when you restart it, it will attempt to restore the Registry keys to the state it was in when the snapshot was taken.

Sorry for all the bold comments in my last reply   By the time I noticed it, it was too late to edit.  Only the 1st word "before" was supposed to be bold ;)

:rose: THANKS, guys - that link led me to a page where i got a CLEAR gif of the SCREEN that i can't see completely - i copied it the pic!
Wooooo!
 - i'm going to do ANOTHER check with all my security apps right now... BUT-
i've been coming up CLEAN (with a couple exceptions, that i cleaned out in ADAWARE).
- the PART INVISIBLE screens in Tea-Timer have persisted, though.
mea culpa:  i admit, i did run a couple HijackThis scans without disabling Tea-Timer or SPYWARE BLASTER... i KNOW BETTER too, i just Screwed Up  :tease: (i don't know about you guys, but i can't SLEEP when my baby laptop isn't purring like a kitten... i think i'd been up 20+ hours trying to get it "unsick" again.)
** at any rate, it doesn't seem like i have any issues with my computer that would cause those partially visible TT alerts.
:exorcize: i'll go offline, disable TT & S Blaster, run Symantec av, adaware se, spybot, roger karlson's bazooka etc., to check again that i'm clean...
and then - MAYBE FULL ALERT MESSAGES IN TT again?
(for the record, i understood WHY TT was asking what it was asking, i just couldn't SEE how to answer. even now that i KNOW which box is which, it seems Kuldgey and Weird the TEA-TIMER alert boxes text DOESN'T SHOW...)
:hysterical: thanks guys! and Brynn, feel free to use bold Anytime!

Good news that you got your baby cleaned up

Just wanted to say that it seems like I read somewhere that those "cropped off" buttons are a known issue.  Definitely not something caused by you or "your baby" ;)

There are known GUI problems with screen display in TeaTimer that prevent you from being able to Allow or Deny a change.  I've been told that you can type an "A" to Allow or a "D" to Deny a change as a temporary work around.

ElPiedra has a "fix" here, but I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THAT YOU FOLLOW IT unless you a confident you can follow it precisely:  http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=122

:hysterical: * SHEEEEEEEESH *   - this is referred to as a "SMALL bug"?!
if i didn't have access to you guys, or similar help, i'd NEVER have been able to choose the ALLOW option.
 :Win73:
PLUS, that post about the problem is dated JUNE 22, 05 - and the bug still PERSISTS.
 * oh well, all i need to know is to CLICK far LEFT to ALLOW. *
 - i suspected MS DEFENDER as having caused the TT problem, cuz a few oddities happened in succession.
 APOLOGIES TO AARON AND BILL GATES! ...defender DID throw me a weird error message, but the problems were magnified by the TT bug.)
- CONGRATS on making FULL MEMBER, Brynn!  :Yahoo:

babyoh, it is understandable that the change has not been made to the GUI.  Software developers are very careful to make only one change at a time, because each change made can ultimately affect something else -- a good practice for everyone to follow when making any changes on our personal PC as well.  I suspect that the Safer-Networking developers have an updated version of the software now, but due to the expense involved in GUI changes, will wait for the next update.

As to Windows Defender, remember, the software is still beta.  That is not to say that it isn't good, but as our own SpyDie has always said:

Quote
Beta. Software undergoes beta testing shortly before it's released. Beta is Latin for 'still doesn't work.'

Yet another reason to only make one change at a time.

Anyone interested in supporting SpyBot's efforts financially can do so here:  http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
