Running Multiple Anti-Spyware Programs
« on: December 02, 2005, 05:41:31 PM »
Can any one comment on this recommendation/comment I read in another forum?

"You can keep as many anti spyware programs as you like. But run only one at a time in the background.
And when you perform a scan, be sure to disable the other.

If you are running multiple Anti Spyware programs, it is a drain on resources. Plus they interfere with each other and can interfere with cleanup efforts and changes you make in this process."

So, if you have Counterspy, Ewido SS, SpywareBlaster, and Tea Timer all active at the same time, is effectiveness lost?

SpywareBlaster isn't running in the background, it isn't a realtime monitor. It changes the settings, and thats it. That is it's job done! ;)

As for Ewido, CounterSpy & TeaTimer...if you mean Ewido's and Counterspy's realtime monitoring programs, then yes the effectiveness is lost really since they will all be fighting to make the "change" when each one finds a spyware trace. You'll have an endless circle of them changing registry keys, and deleting files.

However, if you just mean the scanning part of the two programs (TeaTimer is Spybot's realtime program) then run one after the over.

Plus as that quote says it does drain on resources.

Run one firewall and one antivirus ... install several anti-spyware applications, as each will find a thing or two that the others may not object to ... but only run one as a resident monitor.  While you didn't mention SpywareGuard, it is a good companion to SpywareBlaster.  It does run in the background, but it doesn't consume enough resource to fret about.

These 2 replies are very helpful.
So in choosing which program to choose for resident monitoring and the choices were Counterspy, Ewido SS, and Tea-Timer...does one stand out over the other in terms of monitoring?

I need to go back and look at the advantages of the paid versions of Counterspy and Ewido which appears to be duplication.  If I only need one program w/ real time monitoring and can get updates manually instead of the automatic updates, then I can drop a subscription to one of these.  I can then keep the remaining program for scanning only.

I am on the right track here?

So far I've not noticed a significant drain in resources, and I did check out SpywareGuard previously, but have been totally impressed w/ Counterspy.

I'd say that you really cannot go wrong with either Ewido or Counterspy.  Of course, SpyBot's Tea-Timer is free so that is a consideration as well.  If you are a user of the Kerio firewall, keep in mind that Counterspy will be offering a special deal to their customers on the Sunbelt Kerio Firewall.

Not being familiar w/ the spyware programs 10rand is using...in his thread here:
http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=3491.0,
I have questions tho.  Why would he run all 3 at the same time?  Are they not 3 real time monitors like the 3 I refer to in this thread: Paid counterspy & ewido, and Tea-Timer?
Just trying to learn more about using these spyware programs.
