Spyware Blaster Question

i've become aware that spyware blaster has real-time protection for internet explorer and FIREFOX, but NOT opera.

* does this mean i'm SAFER, using FIREFOX instead of opera??

(i use spybot's TEA-TIMER too, which looks like it mainly blocks for IE, and registry changes... i use iE, but rarely.)

is it riskier for me to do the majority of my surfing in OPERA?
OR.... is opera less prone to attacks, because so few people use it?

Dont know much about Opera so wont go there.
you have to remember SpyWareBlaster is not 'realtime' protection!
SpywareBlaster focuses on prevention and is not a resident
It Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
It Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
and Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
So my guess would be to use FireFox or IE for those benifits
sorry about the Opera browser never liked it

Just to add to this ..And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

IMO, The debate of web browsers safety is like Windows vs Linux...it's endless and there are sources to back up both sides of the arguement.

I'd like to know what others here think but I use Firefox because it DOES seem to be safer than IE (for me anyway). I've seen reports saying IE 7 is tons better than IE 6 ever was, in terms of general usage and safety.

In that respect though, choose a browser you feel comfortable using and then secure it as well as you can.

Like I say though, it's my personal opinion.

You're right, SpyDie, it is about our personal opinions & preferences.  At least when comparing IE, Opera & Firefox, for me, its become more than a "security" issue. 

Certainly, IE can be locked down.  Being on dialup at home, I don't want to wait for the pages to load with IE.  Opera is reportedly the fastest browser.  I like Opera but have less control with it than with Firefox. Even at work (like now on much break), I still prefer Firefox, if for nothing else, for the BBCode extension.  I like to use the Quick Reply so the BBCode extension makes it easy to select text and add the BBCode format (without having to stop & think about it).  See, it really does come down to personal preferences.

QUESTION:
how does SPYWARE BLASTER work, if it's not "Real-Time" protection?
(to actively block installation of ACTIVE-X, adware, etc?)
 - i mainly ask the question, so i don't run software that conflicts with it. But i'm also curious.
if it's not "ON" running in the bg, wouldn't it stop blocking malware?
 :blink:

 (i googled, but all it says is that it's NOT real-time... How's zat work??)

you need a clean system for it to block! if you use anything that it is blocking you have some serious trobles, it blocks url's that give you the coolwebsearch and other bad junk !

now if you want... you can go into your security settings of IE and manually enter in all the sites ;-)

IF you used firefox and you looked in the cookie manage area and looked at the "allowed/blocked" list you would find quite a few blocked ( spywareblaster)

 - i USE spyware blaster -- and it's GREAT.
i guess i'm asking a technical question, or not asking my question well enough to be understood.

i wasn't aware that software could protect me in any way, if it wasn't ACTIVE (ie, "turned on" and "running in the background"), or i used it to run later scans.

i guess it feeds the browsers info of items to block BEFORE it's shut down.
(i was mainly curious, to give me an idea of similarities it might have with OTHER protection, with which it might conflict.)

* i'd visited the javacoolsoftware pages before, but i'd MISSED this... so it's good i went back again and caught it:

SpywareBlaster does not offer protection for Opera at this time. Since Opera does not support ActiveX, malware isn't as big an issue with the Opera browser.

Note: Many programs use Internet Explorer as a default browser. So even if you use Opera all of the time, SpywareBlaster will protect you when Internet Explorer is opened as a default browser.

You might also want to consider giving this one a go .. :thumbsup:

StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents annoying programs from registering themselves behind your back.

To me it is, the onley difference is if you have Ad-watch it might catch it 2 days later ... :hysterical:

I don't use a Symantec firewall or TeaTimer, but it doesn't conflict with the protections installed on this box.

I tried StartupMonitor and thought it decent, but noticed a response delay (that is, Ad-Watch and WinPatrol were both way ahread of StartupMonitor).  So, although I have Ad-Watch, I really like WinPatrol, which includes the features listed below and described here:
