SpywareGuard in HT scan
« on: April 20, 2006, 01:49:25 PM »
Hi Friends,
I don't think this is a problem, but need to be sure.
I installed SpywareGuard not too long ago, but soon after that, I read that one should only have one real-time spyware protection enabled.  I already had Tea Timer enabled, so I then disabled my new SpywareGuard.

Now I just ran a HijackThis scan, and the log shows SpywareGuard as a running process:
C:\Program Files\Javacool\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe

It also shows it is set to run on startup:
O4 - Startup: SpywareGuard.lnk = C:\Program Files\Javacool\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe

I opened SG to confirm everything is disabled, and it appears to be completely disabled.  So I don't understand why HT shows it is currently running and running at startup???

Can someone explain this to me?  Do these HT entries mean that some parts of SG are enabled, even though all the settings appear to be disabled?  If so, could I be at risk by having 2 real-time spyware programs running?  Should I go ahead and delete SG to avoid conflict?  Or have I just overlooked some settings in SG?   :uhm:

Thanks very much.

When you say you 'disabled' it, what exactly did you do?  Did you just right click the SG icon in the task bar?  Did you uninstall it?

Hi winchester73,
Thanks, and sorry for such a delay.  I got a bit side-tracked.  But I will stick close now, until we resolve this.

When I say I disabled it, I opened the program, and disabled Real-Time Scanning Engine, Download Protection and Browser Hijack Protection.  So now, on the Status page, there is a red X beside each of these (3 red x's).  And the icon in the tray (bottom right corner of screen) has a red X through the SG.  I did not uninstall.  I thought disabling it would be sufficient.  I thought it would be good to keep it, should some crisis develop, and my Tea Timer goes down.

But now I'm not sure, since seeing the entries in the HT scan log.

OK, so far so good.  You have disabled it and not uninstalled it.

I'm not sure what you are not sure about.   :(

The HJT log shows SG is loading on boot-up, and then it is disabling the protections as you have asked it to do.  It is running as shown by the icon in the task bar ... the X shows that it is disabled.

I suppose if the HJT entry bothers you, you could 'fix' it, and then the entry won't be there in the HJT log, and the SG icon won't be on the task bar.

If there is something I am missing, please let me know ... I'm not sure why you are worried about something that isn't worrisome.

Hi again,
Well, I was worried about it because I didn't understand.  To me, if something shows as a running process, then heck, that must mean it's running!  I have no way of comprehending "it's running but disabled".  To me, disabled means it's not running.  (enabled=running, disabled=not running)  That's why I didn't understand it showing up as a running process -- I thought I had stopped it from running by disabling it.

As long as I know that those SG entries in my HT log do not indicate that I have 2 real-time protection programs running at the same time, I'm fine.  I trust you, and I don't need to "fix" them, just so I don't see them anymore.

I appreciate your patience with me -- my poor understanding of what must seem like basic facts to you, and my taking a week to respond to your reply, after you replied to my request for help in under an hour.  While I make no apologies for what I don't know, or don't understand, it really was incredibly poor manners to leave you hanging for a week, and I am really sorry.

Thanks again, and take care :D

No worries ...

SpywareGuard is started up because of the item in your HJT log ... the O4 entry means your computer is loading it when you boot up.  So, it is a running process.

Because you have disabled all of the protections that it offers, you are seeing the task bar icon with the X through it, meaning it isn't really doing anything.  It's running, but not doing anything useful.  Sort of a "stand by" mode I guess ...

If it consumed a lot of resources, I'd suggest you stop it from running in the first place ... but having it in the task bar is a convenient way to re-start it should you wish to.
