The Best Security Software, What is It?
« on: October 03, 2006, 01:19:08 AM »
Hi,
I, like many others are very cautious about the security of their machines and want the best protection. I would like to know the best combination of Security Software, that is Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus and Firewall. Currently I am running Spybot SD, Ad-Aware Personal, Windows Deffender and Norton Internet Security 2006. I work off a Windows XP system. Could someone with more knowledge than me please reply with the best combination of Security Software for a Windows XP system and the best way to keep your machine safe.

Thanks. :Hammys pint: :gwave:

well the best security is still the person behind the keyboard!

and i like Firefox for security ( not as buggy as IE and no active X troubles)
and high up on my list would be
spyblaster s & D ( no system resorces)
and
ewido  now part of AVG but still a trial version and after two weeks goes to a good scanner

Hi, ed.hawtho.  Welcome to LzD Forum.

A favorite free program is WinPatrol, which includes the features described here.

In addition, Mitch is being modest.  See his tips in "Mitch's Good Stuff" linked from here.  For additional information on protecting your PC, please see Tony Klein's "So how did I get infected in the first place?" for important tips on how to prevent future infections.

Every system and configuration are different; what works well for one system may not work well on your set up so you will have to do the leg work to determine what works best.

Don't despair or panic as the links that Corrine and mitch posted will give you a good place to start.

As long as you understand the potential issues with using these products together you should be well protected here. No Antispyware product will detect everything and in this grouping there is potential for incompatibility so you must pay close attention to the results each one returns after a scan.

EX: Ad-Aware can detect your SBSD quarantine folder(s) (A warning is given during the SBSD install about this if you have AAW installed and install SBSD)

EX: Symantec (NIS) and Safer-Networking (SBSD) are currently having issues: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

This does not mean that your protection is reduced or poor, only that you should keep what mitch said in the back of your mind when using your computer

All the security and Privacy solutions that you employ can be circumvented if you do not pay attention to your surroundings and use proper safety practices.
