Webroot SpySweeper v5
« on: September 05, 2006, 09:43:04 AM »
Hi.  I've just read on a Lavasoft email that Webroot have fixed the problems with Spysweeper 5 where it conflicted with AdAware.  I recently went back to version 4 following advice here as I was having trouble with mine.... do you know if there were any other "issues" with v5 or do you reckon it might be ok to update my version now?  If no-one knows yet, I don't mind being a guinea pig and trying it for a while to see how it goes, but I didn't want to do that if there were still troubles that people know about.

Cheers, Moose

Here's the McAfee writeup regarding the update:  http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=89522

Edit note:  It just hit me that you asked about Webroot SpySweeper, not McAfee.   :smash:  So, for what its worth to anyone using McAfee, there's the link to what was included in that update.

According to a report at the Lavasoft Support Forums:

Quote
Recently downloaded the Webroot update to Spy Sweeper - now version 5.0.7.1608

After installation and reboot Ad-Aware SE Pro ran just fine.

Hi again.  I re-installed SpySweeper v5 but have started to get problems with shut downs and startups, so I thought I'd do a system restore and also uninstall my v5 with a view to going back to v4. However, when I try to uninstall it I get a message telling me that it can't find some uninstall.dat file (hopefully I've attached a screen shot),

Is there anything I can do about this pls? I just want to use the old version as I'm sure it's the new one that keeps messing me up!

Cheers, Moose

Have they sorted out all the problems with SpySweeper 5 or is it still a case of disable all functionality to get it working...? (though this does not reduce the effectiveness of spysweeper according to them) haha ;)

Back in early August, Webroot released the Webroot update to Spy Sweeper -  version 5.0.7.1608 to fix the conflict between their product and Ad-Aware which caused freezes.

From what I have heard, this did in fact fix the conflict and have not heard of anyone else having problems due to that conflict....as long as they downloaded that update.  The version 5.0.7.1608 is the fix......it was Spy Sweeper version 5.0.5 that was the problem.

But most ppl did not have to go back to version 4 to workaround that freeze.  Just simply disabling their spysweeper during a Ad-Aware scan worked just fine, but for those who wanted a more permanent fix ppl were trying this workaround  http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=2128&hl=workaround   But that solution really isn't necessary now, since they have fixed the problem with their update.

I personally would not recommend using the old version, as you are not getting the updates necessary to keep your computer protected that way.

I would have to say there is another issue that is causing your current problem.

Thanks for that.  You're right, it wasn't only the SpySweeper that was causing me trouble.  Only problem is I've messed up everything so much trying to fix it all that I've got to the stage where my system restore won't work properly either!  Unfortunately I did that to it a few months ago so I've had some practice in resolving it... I just save all my files to disc and then re-install XP and all my programs and files from scratch - so that'll be my spare time sorted for the next few days!

Cheers for the reply and advice anyway, Moose   :Hammys pint:

As I understand it, Webroot made the very "wise" decision to protect critical system files by deciding what process was allowed to access them. I believe it was the critical shields technology... naturally when Ad-Aware scanned these processes/files, it would hang, as the Webroot software did not allow Ad-Aware to have access to them. This also occured with some other softwares such as ZoneAlarm I believe... presumably, Webroots update to SS gave Ad-Aware permission to access the files in question.......  regardless of this fix though, the problem still remains...with this kind of protective method, you may alienate 3rd party applications by restricting the contact they may have with system files/processes.. the symptoms could be very very different... startup / shutdown problems / hanging applications / deadlocks etc...  the only way to solve this problem is to turn off the shields in SS that are responsible...
