Windows OneCare

anyone familiar with the new windows AV, antispyware suite called windows one care?

* for $50.00, you get firewall, anti-virus and antispyware apps.

i got my computer pre-loaded with symantec apps (those "FREE FOR 90 DAYS" things) - and when i "uninstalled" them, to add a different product, the 2 programs had a "shoot out" that was pretty severe. (i think it was between 2 AV aps; this was some time ago)
* symantec won out, just by being more diffcult to "uninstall" than the other app.
ANYWAY, if OneCare turns out to be a good product, it sure would be easier than the hassles i've had with symantex norton.
* curious if OneCare conflicts with ADAWARE, SPYBOT or SPYWARE BLASTER, how good a product OneCare is etc.
if anybody knows... :blink:

I beta tested WOC a number of months ago and had conflicts on my machine so withdrew from the beta program. So I cannot speak to any changes that have been made as the program evolved.  When I was testing, I did not like the firewall policy which allowed all known applications automatic access to the internet.  To change those permissions was not a clear process. 

From a strictly personal point of view, I don't care for "suites" with all eggs in one basket.

I am sure that you could save your self $50 and get just as good protection for you PC.
Programs like AVG & Zone Alarm as well as Ad-aware , Ewido etc for some very good advice on some good free to use programs see "PROGRAMS and INFO for a NEWBIE or OLDIE V2.1"
Another good place to visit is "Ghosts Markers"

what i've read implies that microsoft might eventually bundle onecare with new PC's, offering it "free for 90 days" etc., so that it threatens to put symantec et al out of business.
 * most of my "non-computer" friends like One Product That Does It All, and get scared off by having a half dozen security apps. for some reason, they all are willing to try ADAWARE, but are suspicious of SPYBOT and HIJACKthis, because they have "Spy" and "Hijack" in the name. people are funny.
...anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens with microsoft's efforts with onecare --

being a ex hot rodder i like different programs to do different functions.

and i do practice what i preach on the newbie-oldie list

i got rid of all my $ programs and all is free and haven't hand anything but a tracking cookie in a very long time !
and i agree with corrine !!! i remember i had a norton suite on my system and when i had a problem updating,, well nothing could be updated, and i do not like a computer with a url addy of "target"

and norton,mcafee are already getting ready to roll out their version of "one care", and i am sure they all will have really snappy good looking windows and such, but inside how strong are they???
and i remember after a few years of ad-aware the big companies say a chance to make quick bucks so they all came out with anti-spyware, and most was a joke !!!
i have a friend that has sbc/yahoo protection ( another one care type) and it was totally useless !!!

i do not use windows online much anymore, but once a week i just devode a hour or so running and updating my anti stuff and feel safer than having mr bill protecting me from the flaws in his programs and making $50/year to do it !!

That isn't such a bad thing from the point of view that many new PC's come with trial security software but don't seem to have the right "nags" so the PC owner understands that they need to subscribe.  I think that Microsoft will be able to do a much better job that way.  I would much rather see a brand new PC immediately protected.  That would give the PC owner time to decide what their needs are.

In that case, WOC may be an excellent software package for them to use.

I paid the $19.95 and placed it on my 3 PC's. and was a beta tester

Since the average PC User does not follow through on maintaining their PC Internet Security, WLOC is very easy for them.
 I dont mind the firewall policy since I have not noticed MSFT
 taking risky "allow " decisions .

But I like to use one on my PC's for beta testing software and will most likely replace WLOC on that PC sometime this summer.

Some Security that I used over the past 5 years are:

You might want to try Sunbelt.  They have/had a beta program at one time.  I ran out of time though and just couldn't follow through with it.

You might be interested in agnitum's analysis:  OneCare Firewall: a light-weight approach to a heavy-duty problem.  As Alex Eckelberry wrote in the Sunbelt Blog:

Agnitum, a company which makes an outstanding competitor to my Kerio firewall, has analyzed the OneCare firewall . . .

    Although the program is very intuitive, nice to look at, and easy to use – which is good for the program’s target audience of inexperienced users – its functionality is a big let-down and does not serve that inexperienced user audience well. It reminds us of those a colorful and feature-rich Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) with nothing behind them that you sometimes see at exhibitions, because the vendors couldn’t finish the whole program in time. Microsoft OneCare needs a serious overhaul before it can be considered anything more than just a fancy interface with no real security under the hood.

          o The OneCare firewall failed all but the simplest leak tests and does not offer even the most basic intrusion detection capability, leaving users’ PCs wide open to being hijacked into a botnet
          o The OneCare firewall database of pre-approved applications is very small, and adding each new application requires several user interactions and a reboot
          o  Application access rules are limited to ‘allowed’ and ‘not allowed’—users cannot configure different rules for different types or times of usage, such as allowing IE to connect with some but not all websites
          o   Similar limitations apply to network file access and remote desktop operations
          o   The Windows Defender anti-spyware component of OneCare imposes significant delays on program execution, and is updated on a separate schedule than other OneCare components

Keep in mind that the Agnitum crew are highly respected, very technical and very experienced in security.   

Even with Alex's compliment regarding the Agnitum crew, keep in mind that both SunBelt and Agnitum are Microsoft competitors.  ;)
