Outlook is having issues since 6:41 AM EST.

All I can say, it I must have hit it right since I had no problems logging on.  Update by MJF:  Microsoft authentication issue hits Outlook, Skype, OneDrive, Xbox users | ZDNet

For future reference:  Microsoft | Know when any particular Microsoft service is operating at a reduced capacity or is down at a glance.

Note that https://portal.office.com/servicestatus has been updated since I posted earlier this morning:

Paddy, I had the very same issues this morning for about an hour or so, got a message that my account wasn't valid, then prompted for a password, then returned the same error.  Interestingly enough, I could open my calendar directly with no problems, and then from there could get my mail by clicking on the icon at the bottom left.  Everything is sorted out currently, but I see there are still worldwide reports of problems:
