Adobe software exe files not downloading.
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:11:21 PM »
I've been trying to download Adobe Reader for tax purposes and have yet to get it to install.  Last week my computer informed me that my version of Adobe Flash was out of date and so closed it down for me.  Been trying to get that to download as well....nothing.

I go to the site and choose either Reader or Flash.
Install this 7-something KB exe file that says it's an installer.  This file, btw, cannot be saved for future attempts..my computer (Windows 7) can't find it.  I unclick the okay to also download McAfree Antivirus and go.

The installer runs.  Starts saying it's at 31% and quickly jumps to 41%.  Five seconds or less later it dies with the error message :Timed Out.

I've tried to get the installer to download either program in the middle of the night, early morning, afternoon, evening, weekend, holiday, weekday....doesn't matter.  The same thing always happens.

Is this because I am on dial up?  Yet I never had a problem downloading Adobe Flash when I had a Macintosh.  Thought I'd have even less hassle with a new PC.

Also, I tried the link from three different sources and got the same page and installer exe.  Windows security shows no issues from the attempts.

Confused and frustrated.

Hi, ComicsLover.

Direct FTP download links are available in my blog post at Adobe Releases Critical Update for Flash Player and AIR.  If you still have a problem, you may need to uninstall Flash Player first:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

You can also use the FTP site for Adobe Reader X at ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/ although I personally got rid of Adobe Reader a long time ago and switched to Sumatra PDF.

Thanks!

Yes, I recall you saying that Sumatra was loads better and I downloaded that to go with the PDF software pre-installed with Windows.  Unfortunately, like I said, my state tax website is all kinds of stewpid    stupid  :undecided:.  They insist on making their fill-able tax forms usable only via Adobe 7 [or higher.  At least I hope they mean 'or higher' .]  This despite that the Federal version works just fine without having to download anything special.

Also a bit huffed that Windows took it upon itself to dump my Flash player without consulting my opinion on the matter .  Is this going to happen every time Adobe or any other plug in has a new version?  Is there a way to get Windows 7to just give a warning message rather than be so Big Brother-ish?

Hi, ComicsLover.

I'm don't know what happened, but can assure you that "Windows" wouldn't have dumped your Flash player.

All I know is that I got a windows error pop up stating that my version was out-of-date (I'd downloaded it in October!) and had been closed down "for my safety".  Maybe it was the browser (Firefox)?

Also, (am ready to scream with frustration here) I tried that Adobe Reader link and it turns out it take something like 5 hours 5-10 minutes to complete the download....and my dial up connection max time before auto-shutdown by the telephone company is 5 hours.

For years I got around this kind of thing when I discovered the Firefox add-on DownThemAll! would allow for pausing and restarting a download even after an auto-disconnect from online as long as I didn't actually turn off my computer's power.  Since getting the PC, I've now suffered finding after the fact that this is no longer the case...I get back online only to find the program "resuming" at 0KB saved.  Don't know what happened, but unless we can get high speed up and running soon I'm screwed for all but Windows downloads (which seem to be exempt from this reinforced all-or-nothing downloader rule.)

Is there a way to tell before valuable online time is wasted whether a file is truly resumable after a disconnect?  I hate getting within a few KB of Complete only to have my time cut off and lose hours of downloading.

When I was on dial-up, I used the free version of Star Downloader, which has the ability to pause/resume downloads.  I always made the point of intentionally pausing a download if it wasn't completed when disconnecting so don't know how it would work with an auto-shutdown by your provider.

I got it!

Unfortunately, Stardownloader does not show on my Firefox 3.0 browser even though the settings on Stardownloader are marked for IE, Firefox, and Opera.  I had to switch to IE in order to download the FTP...would much rather use Firefox rather than have to transfer browsers every time I run into something I need over five hours to download.

But I did get the file and it worked with the tax website.  :D  Yes!  And if all goes well (ie, nothing else detrimental happens to delay it) we might get that high speed next week.  *crosses fingers*....and toes...and eyes for good measure.

If only I had high speed in order to get Amazon to load properly in order to research decently good routers for high speed.  *thunks head against keyboard.*

One day I'm going to look back on all of this and laugh.  Or cry.  Or something.
