Avira 2012 update question
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:41:58 PM »
I was offered an update file for Avira's new free antivirus edition.

I started to install it and it had an alert that the new version is not compatible with Spyware Blaster.

I'm wondering if it is a bad idea to go through with the update. My current version is doing fine and not causing me any problems. I hate to mess with something that doesnt' need fixing.   I also checked the Avira forums and saw that there seem to be quite a few issues with the new version.

However, I didn't find any information that  suggested I would be fine staying with my current version.   I'd like to know if it is safe to not do the update.

The integrity issues with Avira have gotten significantly worse with the release of version 12: The installer now dupes people into uninstalling most other security programs on their system, implying these are "potentially incompatible" with Avira --- even if they aren't. It allegedly objects to the presence of SpywareBlaster, WinPatrol, Secunia's PSI, SpyBot, AdAware, SAS, MBAM, and Comodo's firewall (among others).

sheesh. thats' terrible.

I don't think I will update.

I even wonder if I should start looking for a new anti-virus.

The hype on the Avira forum about the Ask toolbar they are pushing now is that you get surfing protection when you use it, and they continually say,  yes, you can disable it, but you will also be disabling your surfing protection!

As long as your current version is supported and is being updated, you'll be fine for the time being.  However, if you are going to shop around for a new A/V, check the tests at http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index and http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews

The only two free programs I am currently recommending are Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast.

Well that narrows it down for me since Windows XP is not compatible with MSE.

However, I think I'll just wait until it becomes clear I need to change.  Setting up a new anti-virus seems to always involve some kind of configuration hassle.

Windows XP is compatible with MSE.  See Microsoft Security Essentials Product Information

o so it is.... I wonder what I was thinking of.

At anyrate, cnet.com review says it slows down the computer more than comparable programs.  They recommend Panda Cloud Free Edition 1.3 as a better light-weight antivirus.

Do you know any downsides to that application?

Don't base your decision on what you read on one site.  What is more important, effectiveness or being light-weight?

Since you aren't in a rush to make any changes, check other reviews as well.  Here are a couple, I'm sure you can find more:

http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200918/3565/Review-Panda-Cloud-Antivirus?page=1

Panda (not Panda Cloud) had 3 fails in VB tests but hasn't submitted recently:  http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/vendor?id=13

Here's the results of the most recent tests on Windows XP of A/V vendors at VB:  http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/test?id=165

There are also paid solutions to consider.

Thanks Corrine..I'll check those out.

I would likely go with your recommendations anyway.  But generally speaking, the cnet reviewers give pretty accurate reviews, so that one made me wonder.
