Broadband connection
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:02:52 PM »
Finally got high speed on Saturday.  (family went with Cox.)

I was all excited, spent Sunday checking out websites (ones I'd been to before but couldn't go very far into because of high graphics like Amazon.)

Today I've been on for two hours and counted two times when I could not connect to websites for about five minutes each time.  However, my modem said I was connected.

Is this something usual for broadband or should I be wondering if my modem or router is not all that great?

Just want some experienced advice as...yeah, only been on the broadband bandwagon for all of 30 hours and wasn't expecting problems already.

depends on the sites that you were trying to get to,
as some sites do take a while to load more so if they busy.

But I bet you wish you had changed long a go but hay you now flying a long.

Hi, ComicsLover.

You could go to http://www.speedtest.net/ to check your connection speed (upload/download) to see if it matches what is included in the subscribed package with Cox (http://ww2.cox.com/aboutus/policies/limitations.cox).

If you are using a wireless connection, that can also affect connection speed.  This may help:  How to improve your wireless network and boost its signal.

We went with ethernet wired rather than wireless as we were told it was faster and more secure.

Some sites are currently having bandwidth issues, but I'm talking not being able to get conected to any site at all for several minutes....not just slow connections or overburdened sites.  My speed is a whopping 20MB! (wholly tomatoes!)

Yep, it's way faster than anything I'd ever imagined, but the couple of blips in connection while my computer's 'Cisco' connection says it's on and 'secure' worried me.  I did a diagnostic during the first blip and my windows 7 said to turn off the modem.  But the connection cleared up before I got over to do that.  (Modem is in a different room.)

If your brother or other family member experiences the same issues, I suggest contacting Cox customer service.

Thanks...he did at the same time and also this morning apparently, but no more than a few minutes like I experienced.  If it happens again tomorrow or later, I'll call the provider.

FYI update:  I checked with coworkers and they said that this happens now and then, but, yes, is very short in duration.  Since then a Cox tech came out on his own and rechecked our wiring because our TV is from another company and they wanted to be sure there wasn't a conflict with the lines.  Since then no interruptions in service and speed remains slightly higher than what we thought we were going to get even with both of us online at the same time.

Very, VERY pleased with the high-speed so far.
(Just did an update that took 20 seconds to download and install.  This same size MB would have taken me nearly 3 hours with dial up.  I couldn't be more gobsmacked if Superman came crashing through my window and offered to take me to his Fortress of Solitude for a glass of sarsaparilla.   :Hammys pint:

When I used to read about how much bandwidth was being used up I'd choke.  How could people possibly use that much?

Having visited YouTube to look up one. single. thing.....I now know.

How the heck did I get from looking for a single Flash TV theme educational science show to watching several Saturday Morning Cartoons from my childhood including *gasp* Rocky & Bullwinkle Moose?!  Is that the time?! That can't be the time! OMG I'm stuck in a Nostalgia loop!  Next thing you know I'll be watching Mr. Magoo at Midnight rather than studying tax forms! :thud:
