Computer freezes when insert external hard disk
« on: January 05, 2012, 07:19:45 AM »
Hello, all. It's me again...

It seems that my computers' problems never end...

Now, it's about my computer, the one I formated recently.

Suddenly, every time I insert an external hard disk, the computer freezes. The mouse is working, but when I click anywhere, everything stop working, and I have to turn it off from the power button. If the external disk is inserted before start up, then it works fine... The problem is only with this computer. Everything was ok, since two weeks ago...

Another problem with this computer is that I cannot watch youtube videos, or videos embeded in some sites, using firefox. I thought that this was a general problem, but today I realized that only with firefox this problem exists...

What operating system?  What anti-virus?

Did you install any new hardware or software just prior to the problem starting?

ESET?  As I recall, you had a license for Panda Global Protection.

Yes, ESSET.

I uninstalled Panda, after seing that language problems insisted. A few days after format everything was ok and then, again spanish appeared.

So, I have bought ESSET licence. Much easier to use, light and nice!

Are you running the last upgrade to ESET NOD32?  That would be 5.0.95.0

It's meant to address lockup issues occurring after mounting external USB disks on Windows XP.

YES!  Now the problem with the external is ok!

THANK YOU Winchester73!!!!  :mitch:

I don't know if this a problem, but when I click on the hard disk icon right down on the monitor to safely remove the disk, it always says that the generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Is there a way to fix this too?

About the other problem (Firefox cannot plays youtube videos) should I open another topic or leave it here?

That warning comes because some file, program, or system operation is accessing the drive, or cache information has yet to be written to the disk.  Does the problem persist if you wait a while and try again?

As for your Firefox question, I don't use it, so I have no idea ... but someone else will.  Leave the thread together rather than starting a new one.

Yes, the problem persists. I think that a folder named SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION in the external disc causes the problem, but I cannot delete it, even if I turn off system restore...

Hi, DR M.

This topic discusses the How can I delete System Volume Information on non important drives...please help!! - Windows XP Support.  Perhaps it will help.

As to Firefox and YouTube, make sure you have the latest plugins, especially Adobe Flash.  Check here:  http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Hi Corrine.

I have already read that topic...

Till now, I did these steps:

1. turned off system restore

2. disabled system restore service

But the folder is still in the external disk, as well as a folder named RECYCLED. I can't delete them, I can have access inside them. And as a result (I think) I can't safely remove the external hard drive.

As for the Firefox I have installed the latest flash player. I think I will turn back to IE. But I would like to know why this is happening and if it is something wrong with my computer... (I think I have to buy another one...)

If memory serves, the RECYCLED folder is the Win 95 / Win 98 recycle bin ... RECYCLER is the proper XP recycle bin.

As for the RECYCLER folders, the recycle bin on your desktop is simply a shortcut to all the RECYCLER folders in your computer.  If you have C:\ D:\ and E:\ drives for example, your recycle bin shows the contents of C:\RECYCLER, D:\RECYCLER, and E:\RECYCLER.  Having these RECYCLER folders on each drive saves XP from having to copy a deleted file or folder from any other drive to the C:\ drive.

"I can't delete them" ... well, they are protected system files for a reason  :)

What kind of external drive are you talking about?  Brand, size, approximate age, etc ...

I followed some steps from the topic Corrine suggested and downloaded windirstat. I ran it and deleted permanately RECYCLER. But System Volume Information is there, running and not let me remove the disk...

External Hard Drive: Philips, 232GB, two years old, I think.
