Having Thunderbird checked by MS Essentials?
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:56:47 AM »
Asking this now because I've been assuming and it just struck me yesterday 'assuming' with a computer wasn't terribly bright.

I'm using Thunderbird rather than Windows 7's mail program.   Is there a way to have Microsoft Security Essentials check incoming mail as it downloads?  Or if not, after?

I'm asking because most programs on my comp can be scanned by MSE by right clicking and getting that option from the list.  My mail folders in Thunderbird don't have this option though it seems I can scan the desktop icon and Programs icon from Start.  Even there, though, is it actually scanning my mail for viruses?
  Should I be using Windows Live Mail instead of my beloved Thunderbird?

Hi, ComicsLover.

No. MSE does not scan your e-mail and it wouldn't make a difference if you switched to Windows Live Mail.  Although licensed e-mail programs do include the option to scan e-mail, is it really necessary?  See Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

Malware isn't included in your e-mail but rather in attachments.   Don't open attachments from unknown sources or that you aren't specifically expecting.

Well, that's good to know, thanks.     :cheesy:

(I'm sweating a bit because my anti-I.D.-hijacking company just emailed me that a company I did business with a few months back has had their customer info hijacked.  Lovely.)

Am checking out things like spywareblaster as extra precautions (yes, know not to run more than one program at a time, thanks for that earlier bit of  info too!)

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every person on Earth respected others as fellow living beings?  Didn't their mothers teach them it wasn't right to steal?

SpywareBlaster works in the background so no worries about conflicts with other security software.

Oops!  The malware authors have gotten clever.  See New Drive-By Spam Infects Those Who Open Email -- No Attachment Needed - Dark Reading.

Make sure you have Thunderbird set to "text" view.  The preference for incoming emails is found under View > Message Body As.  From there, switch from the default Original HTML to Plain Text.

Hi, ComicsLover.

Here's an update to the information provided in the article referenced above about the "drive-by spam" with instructions how to turn off the value of mail.inline_attachments from true to false. With that setting, Thunderbird will not try to render your attachments in the main message window.

Note also the advisory:

As always, computer users should ensure that their PDF readers, Flash players (and indeed Java installations) are up-to-date.

Java is particularly important, as that is the platform right now that is being most actively used as an infection vector across other exploit kits. And, sad to say, hardly anyone seems to bother updating Java.
