Is my laptop wireless?
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:04:30 PM »
Hi it's Mary here,

I bought my daughter a laptop for christmas and promised i would have a wireless connection installed. Trouble is i don't know whether the laptop i've bought (as it isn't a new one) needs a network card.
When i looked at my system settings it said my laptop was a Dell laptop even though it's a Toshiba Satelite (unsure of model number as there are no labels on it)T
his information was listed:

Intel (R) Celeron 100 M Mobile Network.

I tried the installation disk for Virgin Mobile and the disk informed me i need a network adapter.

Also i'm running the Windows Vista Black Edition.

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

If you can currently connect to the Internet download and run this program http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html It will give you a good Idea of what all is on it. Don't post the information as some of it could be sensitive. Let us know model # as it should show on the belarc report.

Mary ... by "Windows Vista Black Edition" are you talking about the color of the computer, or the operating system?  If the latter, you have a known pirated version of Windows on this computer.  In fact, this "edition" is one of the most notorious pirated editions of Windows Vista, and is infected with malware that will compromise the system.

I'm also a bit troubled by the "Dell laptop even though it's a Toshiba Satelite" statement, as it also leads me to suspect the labels were intentionally removed.

Did you buy this computer from a reputable vendor?  If so, I'd contact them and find out more about your acquisition.

If you indeed have what is considered an illegal version of Vista, our ability to help you is going to be quite limited here.  We do not deal with pirated software in this forum.

I am a first time buyer and not very experienced with computers.
I bought the laptop second hand. I wasnt aware that the software was illegal.
as I didn't know what software was on the laptop.
The seller promised us that the laptop was internet enabled so we took their word for it.

ouch.

go back to them asap, get your money back, or get them to give you the original recovery disks, or take it to a reputable shop, have them determine the brand, make, model, et al, and order recovery disks for the vendor, whether toshiba or dell or hp or whoever.  (recovery disks are about $15)

Mary, I hope you understand that I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news ...  :(

I feel badly that you ended up in this situation.  Is there hope that the seller will help you?  If they are a computer store, they should know better, and I'd report them to the Better Business Bureau if I were you.  If it was a private seller, perhaps they knew, perhaps they didn't.  If nothing else, they promised the computer would access the internet, so perhaps they will help you with that?

A reminder for anyone who comes along down the road and reads this thread ...

Cracked/warez versions of programs sound "good" and "cheap", but they can cause all sorts of headaches for you and damage to your computer.  No reputable forum will support any method of cracking, warez, workarounds, providing any methods, tools, or posting of links designed for this express purpose.

There are people who have spent a great deal of money on developing and testing hardware and software, marketing and distributing it, and then on education and support for it. They have spent long, tedious, difficult and brain-numbing days/nights on their endeavor. They are attempting to make an honest living and feed their families.

Let's not support the thieves who rip them off and cheat them out of the fruits of their labor.

Mary,

If you get no joy from the seller, and if that person is a genuine trader, contact your local Trading Standards Department. If the seller was an individual you would be advised to contact West Midlands Police Hi-Tech Crime Unit (probably via your local police station).
