Lost email password

I have Windows Vista, a Compaq Presario laptop and use Windows Mail. I have others, but I've used this as my primary email for several years and the others are more private.

A week or so ago, the box popped up requesting user name & password. I have no idea why this happened so suddenly but I cannot remember my password. Worse, this happened once before a few months ago. I don't remember how it was resolved or by whom, but the username and password I had written down don't work currently.  I've wasted enough time trying to figure this out and am asking for help. I don't want to "contact your mail server" which is all MS will suggest, because I have AT&T. Besides spending hours on the phone (mostly robo menus) when I finally spoke to someone in Taiwan or India, they informed me they could give me my password for a $55. charge. I said no thanks.  Can someone help?

Your ISP (AT&T) requires some sort of account authentication when you "send/receive" in your Windows Mail program.  Otherwise there is the risk that your email messages will be downloaded to someone other than you (or authorized by you).

Since you are using Windows Mail, you would need to update the password saved in the e-mail progam as well.

Thanks SOOOO much winchester73!

Wonderful links which I will keep but hope to not have to use them again. Just so you'll know the first one got me thru fairly fast and although speaking with someone in India (sounded like) the CSR was very sweet and patient when I asked her to repeat instructions. Best of all........she re-set my password!  :D

P.S. ~ Sorry, I know that little happy dancer is annoying but that's how I feel having struggled with this problem for the last several weeks ~
