My desk top won't go to windows

I used my desktop this morning and all was well. It asked to download some updates right at start up and I allowed. they seemed liked normal updates, and I have AVG security on the desktop so I was not to worried. Worked on my essay, emailed it to myself, and shut down computer. When I went back to work on my essay, computer would load to my desk top but would not start anything. Then it stall out. I tried restarting and no it says no bios drive installed. Did I download a virus? or have I got another problem.

Have you tried starting your PC in Safe Mode  if not then please try it .
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
Now type restore into the Start menu search box, and you’ll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu.
Click on the revommended restore point, you will have to confirm and then restart your computer to roll the system back.
Once you have done that your PC will be restored to before you installed the updates

Note
None of your Data will be removed using system retore

A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

This suggests either a BIOS battery is dead, or the hard drive is failing/failed. Or the cable's loose (hard to say). How old is this system? Do you have a "computer friend" you know that works on hardware? (The BIOS settings can be a challenging place to try and assist with remotely.)

You have a backup of everything important, right?

Try the f8 method and it would not go into safe mode. System is 3 or 4 years old, but has been only been used about once a month for the last 2 years. I don't have a friend in the field but there is somewhere local I am comfortable taking it. The bois battery was one thought I had because I had that happen with another system. I will take it in tomorrow.
