Results of Secunia scan
« on: January 14, 2012, 03:02:39 AM »
Hello, The computer is running well, but I do have a small ongoing issue.

When I run a Secunia scan, I come up with 97% secure with two problems:

Microsoft Windows Vista is "insecure" with one green square threat rating - when I click to update, I get a window which says "There are no updates available for your computer."

Adobe Shockwave Player 10.x is end of life.  Four of the 5 boxes are colored in under the threat rating. When I click to update, I get a window called "opening sw_lic_full_installer.msi Save File or Cancel."  I'm not sure where to go with this.

Thank you for any help.

you use the custom update as there may be one there that you missed

Save it then uninstall the old version,
After that use the .msi to install the never version.

I got rid of the Microsoft Windows Vista notation on the Secunia report, but the Shockwave Player 10.x (version 10.4.1.35) is still in the scan report.

I went to uninstall it through the settings control panel.  I see that I have Shockwave 11.6.  So where did the version in the Secunia report come from?

Shall I uninstall the 11.6 version then do as you said with the .msi?  Would that be "Run" or "save"?

Sorry if I'm asking the same question twice but I need confirmation of what I can do.  Courage...I need courage!

Thank you.

Hi, Daisy.

Is Secunia giving you a location of the older version of Shockwave Player?  I suspect it is in your download folder so all you need to do is navigate to the location and delete the old installer.

It could also be remnants of that old version ... PSI found a bunch of remnants for various programs all over the lappy I was working on this afternoon.

I found this under the Shockwave 10.x listing:

C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\SwInit.exe, version 10.4.1.35

Not sure what to do with it.

Actually I did find it.  Can I just do a simple "delete"?

Hope I'm not being a pest, but how can I remove that Shockwave from my computer?

Shockwave should be listed in Control Panel -  Add/Remove Programs [or some equivalent thereof, depending on your operating system].   It may be listed as ADOBE Shockwave Player.

Once removed, unless you know you actually use it, I would not bother to re-install the newest version.   [Shockwave seems to be limited to some "heavy gaming programs"... those gaming programs need it... very little else does.]

Daisy, you're NOT being a pest.  How else do we learn if we don't ask questions?

I agree with ky331.  If you aren't into heavy gaming, it isn't likely you need Shockwave Player installed.  (Adobe now, formerly Macromedia)

Sometimes my kids come and play games.  I have Shockwave 11.6 shown as a program, so that's fine.

It's this one I want to get rid of: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\SwInit.exe, version 10.4.1.35

It does not come up on the screen for "uninstall" programs, so I don't know how to get rid of it and it shows on my Secunia report.  I can delete it, but I'm not sure that's the best way to remove it.

Thank you.

Yep, manual deletion is fine ... in fact, you can delete the entire C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Shockwave 10 folder.  That's what I did on this lappy.

Shockwave 11 installs in a different location:  C:\Windows\System32\Adobe\Shockwave11

Note the Adobe folder rather than the Macromed one.

Flash continues to install in the Macromed folder, but Shockwave has a new default installation location.

My thanks to you all.  Now my Secunia score is perfect, and I can sleep nights! (Just kidding about the sleeping.)
