Secunia scan results
« on: August 10, 2011, 06:40:36 PM »
No problem with the computer, just wondering about something....

When I scan with Secunia, the Adobe Shockwave Player is always "insecure."   Is that to be expected?

Also, I have these results as needing updating and wonder if there are duplications or things I don't need:

Adobe Shockwave Player 10.x
*Adobe AIR 2.x
*Adobe Flashplayer 10.x (Active X)
*Adobe Reader X 10.x
Adobe Shockwave Player 11.x (Active X)
Adobe Shockwave Player 11.x (NPAPI)

Everything is up-to-date now, but the starred ones above are labeled "Up-to-date (AU)"  What is AU?  To me it's Australia.

Thank you.  Susan

Susan ...

I suspect you are seeing the insecure warning for Shockwave because you have the old 10.x installed.  There was an update for 11.6 yesterday.  Does Secunia give you a solution for this?  You might try using Add/Remove programs to uninstall version 10.  Then go grab the latest update as explained here:  http://www.landzdown.com/index.php/topic,18768.msg145669.html#new

Programs that can be automatically updated have "(AU)" in the Install Solution column.

NPAPI is the designation given by Secunia to both the Adobe Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for non IE browsers.  If you don't use something other than IE, you don't need that one.

Thank you for your reply.

When I go to uninstall/change program, Shockwave 11.6 is there but not  10.x

What operating system do you have?  If XP, or older (not Vista or 7), here is the link to the Adobe Shockwave uninstaller:  http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#sp

Instructions here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14224.html

Save the uninstaller to your desktop, then quit/exit any applications you have open. Launch the uninstaller from your desktop and follow the instructions in the dialog boxes which appear.

Then, reboot to clear out any left over ocx files.

It may remove both versions, in which case you'll need to download a fresh copy of the version released yesterday for both IE and non-IE browsers:  http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

I am having trouble finding the Shockwave uninstaller for Vista.  I found the Player uninstaller, but not Shockwave.

I haven't been able to find the answer to the Vista installer question, and still haven't heard back from my Adobe contact ...  :(

Are you using the Secunia OSI or PSI?

Since it isn't in Add/Remove Programs, I'm wondering if what Secunia is seeing is the remnants of a folder.  Can you post the filepath that Secunia reports for the insecure version?  If it is just remnants, we can manually remove.  It's also possible that Secunia found it in your downloads file.

You might also try this:

In order to uninstall the Shockwave player simply use the file UNWISE.EXE located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10

Using Secunia PSI.

Here is the path: C://Windows/System32/Macromed/Shockwave 10/SwOnce.dll

Not sure about how to do unwise.exe.  Not even sure if I have that.  Does it have to be downloaded?

Unwise.exe is downloaded along with the Shockwave Player, and resides in the same folder.  It is the uninstaller they provide with the installation.

Do you know how to "explore" your files?  If unwise.exe isn't in that Shockwave10 folder, we can just manually deleted the entire contents.  You already have 11 installed, so you have no need for 10.

If you don't know how to find files and folders, post back and we'll give you some guidance.

Shockwave Player 11 is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11 (which you can see is a different location from 10).

I know how to "search for files or folders" from the "start" button,  but I do not know how to find the Shockwave 10 file.  I only see it on the Secunia scan as end of life.  I know I sent you the path, but I don't know how to go there.  Sorry.  I don't mean to be  a pain!

Daisy, no worries, you're asking good questions (and it is almost better to ask BEFORE rather than AFTER   :D ).

I did this very same thing about Shockwave 10  on this Vista box, and had no problems whatsoever with 11 running just fine.  For some reason, the installation of the new Player didn't remove the old one.  SO, I did it manually.

Right click on the Start button at the lower left, then Explore (just below Open, at the top), as you said you are familiar with.  You'll see folders listed in the left window.  Scroll down towards the bottom, and click on the arrow next to WINDOWS.  You'll see all the subfolders appear.  Then scroll down what has opened up and click on the arrow next to SYSTEM32.  Do the same and open up MACROMED.  You'll see a folder labelled Shockwave 10.  Right click and delete the entire folder.  You'll get a prompt or two to confirm the deletion.  The folder and all of its contents (not just SwOnce.dll) will be sent to your recycle bin.

It's gone now, problem solved.

You'll need to empty your recycle bin (right click, then "Empty Recycle Bin").  Then you can run Secunia PSI again, and it won't notice that outdated SWP10 any more.

You can test that SWP11 works here:  http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

You'll see 11.6.1r629 in the box.

I think everything else on that original list is fine, but PSI may say your Flash is outdated as a new update was released recently.  If not, you're good to go.

Oh great, it's gone!! Thank you.

When I went to the link you provided, it said "Installation Complete."  Smaller print said, "When you see the animation playing below the labeled box, then your installation was successful."  Animation, like something moving?  I didn't see that.

When I go to uninstall/change programs, I see SWP11 listed.

When I go to the program files list, this is what I see in the Adobe folder: Acrobat.com, Flash Player, Reader 10.0.  Should I see SWP here?

Do you think I am ok now?

I reran Secunia and got 100%.

Yeah, I don't see any animation either.  Older versions used to do something, but haven't seen anything in the past couple downloads.  You are fine.

No, it doesn't show in the Program Files, but does show in Add/Remove.  You're fine.

I think you are good to go!

Here's a site where you can test your Shockwave Player:  http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/mountainbike_game/

Click "Demo Mode"
