Skype requesting security cert update?
« on: July 23, 2017, 12:05:29 PM »
I updated Skype.  After a reboot of the computer, I am prevented from using Skype because it is asking for somekind of certificate renewal.  It seems to be for the Yahoo ads that track my interests to deliver current ads  and is about:

btrll.com

The details in the left panel of the screenshot say it is:

btrll.com, Yahoo! Inc.

But there is also a note on that panel that says "ensures the identity of a remote computer"
what?  why is there a remote computer involved?  That made me come here to ask about this.

I wanted to make sure this is ok before I allow it to update the certificate.

Should I go ahead and click the "Install Certificate" button?  Or is there something else I should do to get Skype to let me use it again?

Hmmm. The panels disappearred, so I  ended the task for Skype in the Task Manager, and restarted it and its working as normal.

What do you suppose was going on?

It was not asking for a renewal, it reported the name on the cert was invalid or didn't match. That could be caused by any number of things - even something as simple as a lost packet during the data transfer.

btrll.com belongs to Brightroll, an advertisement firm for Yahoo and many others. Considering it seems to have happened only once, and the cert, according to your screen shot is valid until Oct 26, and it happened when you were attempting to contact a site (as opposed to while you and your computer were idle) I would call it a fluke and not worry about it. I note also several users have reported this same btrll.com invalid name errors, with Skype, Yahoo, and other sites. It is a little disconcerting, but not really a problem - at least not on your end.

But, just for a warm fuzzy that all is okay, I would probably scan my computer for malware.

Thanks for the reply!

I ran a MalwareBytes scan and all is clear.
