Stand by restart

I have a Compaq SG3-220UK machine with Windows 7 Home Premium. I have "Shutdown", "Hibernate" and "Standby" icons on the destop. If I double click on "Standby" the machine goes into standby for a short time and then restarts itself. This can occur several times in succession. Then sometimes it will go into "Standby" and remain until I press the space bar to restart it. The self restarting occurs much more often than staying in "Standby" mode. Shutdown" and "Hibernate" are OK. Any ideas as to why this is happening? It is irritating.

For those times you press the space bar (or otherwise get the system's attention), it sounds like sleep mode is working as designed - it's staying in sleep mode until you wake it. For those cases where the system wakes itself, it's also likely working as designed - something (program, hardware) is telling the system to wake up so it can do something.

You might want to check if there are any driver updates for your devices - but beyond that, it's a guessing game from my end on what might be causing the system to wake - it could be an email program, it could be a mouse, it could be a printer...

I have  :2cents: to offer if I may.

I found a link that applies to Resolving Problems with Sleep Mode in Windows 7 that applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows 7. That may be a good read, too!

PS: We had the same issue on a computer that was "home built". Found the slightest wiggle would move the mouse and wake it up. Also our cat liked to play with the mouse. Does this occur when you are watching or when you are not?

Thank you Donnab and Aaron Hulett. The HP website looks very promising. I will try out the suggestions when I have digested the information. The problem is not critical.
