Thunderbird 3.0 not recognized by mail server anymore
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:38:08 PM »
I was able to get my mail from Thunderbird at least the day before yesterday, but this morning Thunderbird refuses to recognize either my user name and/or password.  I can get into my mail just fine by going directly to my mail program online, but have Thunderbird tied via POP.

Tried going in and changing password and then POP forwarding to IMAP.  That didn't work so changed it back to POP.  Still Thunderbird insists the server does not recognize my user/password.

Then I remembered that my computer had downloaded an Optional download from Windows Update 7.  It was pretty small as ended very fast even with dial up.  However, there was also an update for my specific computer that was over 3MB....something about things like driver updates.  (It popped up from my window that it was downloading.)

Going into Windows Update I checked for the name of the last update...it shows the last install as December 14--for any of the Windows updates.  Yet I know I've had at least two since Christmas alone.  They've been coming (Optional ones) almost daily since the last Essential download for Security.

I've no idea how to look up the specific computer download.  Does Windows 7 keep this information logged somewhere?

Any ideas on why Thunderbird would suddenly stop downloading my mail?  (Yes, I had mail to download just this morning.  Had to view it online.)

Yep, tried that.  Made a second account only with IMAP.  Tried downloading both with POP and IMAP...Thunderbird just kept trying to log in with the server.  I finally had to shut it down via Windows Task Manager.

At this point am thinking either will have to try an old restore point or uninstall Thunderbird and reinstall it to see if that clears up the problem.

(Also, updated and ran Microsoft Security Updates and Malewarbytes..full scans.  No infections.)

Update:

I downloaded Thunderbird and will try a reinstall this weekend if the POP still doesn't work tomorrow.

In the meantime, I created a temporary account using the resident Windows mail program using the same information I used on Thunderbird...just let it auto create as an IMAP rather than using Manual to make the new account a POP.

It worked like a dream.

So the problem has to do with Thunderbird and since it happened within the last 24 hours it must be that either Thunderbird is having issues, The HP update corrupted the Thunderbird, or the Windows Optional before last did.

In any case, I found the window that lists all my Windows Update downloads including up to today's....but there doesn't appear to be a way to uninstall the MSE definitions updates (the only Optionals that have been downloaded.)  This doesn't make sense.  Why would only Important updates allow the computer owner to uninstall them? :?

Checked HP's help site and couldn't find any list of recent updates from them either.  No idea if it was a driver update or what they sent me.  Tomorrow I'm also going to try to find how to turn off the b-danged auto updater so I can at least take a look at descriptions before an update gets installed!

Issue has been cleared.  God knows what happened.  No updates received today. Must have been a glitch at Thunderbird that they cleared up because I didn't do a thing save try one last attempt to log in and it started giving me my messages.

Wasted several hours downloading a new copy of Thunderbird for nothing, but still...what a relief!
