Windows7 & Sleep/Hybernate issue
« on: January 09, 2012, 04:49:03 AM »
I and sibling purchased exact same computers just days apart.
I put my computer to sleep via Start>Sleep, then woke it by clicking the left mouse button.
Sibling complained his did not do and pointed out the Sleep Function key on our keyboards.

Like an idiot, I pressed it to see if it worked.  (It did.)

Ever since no matter what path I use to put my computer to sleep (Function Key or Off/On button, or Start) I can ONLY awaken it by pressing the Off/On button.

Looking up Help on the hard drive (search word 'wake') it says you can change the sleep function on the mouse through Device Manager and choosing Power Management.  I selected the mouse in DM....there is nothing that says Power Management.  (Don't you just love it when that happens?)

So now it is BOTH of us would like to be able to awaken our computers by clicking on the mouse button.  (Thanks a lot, HP keyboard and my trusting nature.)

Can someone tell me whether Sleep/Hibernate are functions of Windows 7 or of the particular computer manufacturer and their own software?  Want to cut down which online Help files I need to tear through to get back the mouse function I had.

I forged ahead and visited the Microsoft help site (same info as on my [no] Help hard drive.)  Then went to HP's support help and found that people's best 'solutions' were to...never let the computer go to sleep?  Seriously?  That was the best anyone could come up with in the face of MS's misinformation?

It would appear that this is one of those things that users have to learn to live with because there simply is no solution.

When my computer desktop crashed and I had to do a 'recent restore point' that fixed the issue with my Sleep/mouse.  Good thing as I still can't locate this 'Power Management tab' that Windows 7 files insists exists within the devices listed under Device Manager.

I'm beginning to think Windows was developed by The Joker.

Sleep/Hibernate are in Windows, which works hand-in-hand with the hardware to make those options happen (suspending to disk - low power state - power-down...).

"Make sure that you have the most current drivers all of your devices." Either the device driver needs updating (which will then expose power controls), or, it just doesn't expose power controls and there's nothing to set here. If it were available, you'd see something similar to what's explained here: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-7/prevent-a-mouse-from-waking-windows-7-up-from-sleep-mode/. Follow up with the mouse manufacturer with questions.
