Configuring Wireless Firewall (happens to be SBC)
« on: March 03, 2006, 10:13:07 PM »
:rose: i'm setting up a DSL WIRELESS FIREWALL (from SBC)-
1) Do these settings look good?
2) I turned my NORTON Firewall BACK ON, because i was getting BOMBARDED with popups. i have no problems, and i've been online 3 days. TWO ACTIVE FIREWALLS = BAD IDEA? (if so, i can shut down Norton's and leave it's POPUP BLOCKER, etc on)

 * here are my FIREWALL settings * (by the way, they told me it was a ROUTER too... it doesn't say router anywhere... how do i check just what it is, if it's working, etc?)

 - my FIREWALL SETTINGS   - ALL are DEFAULTS for HIGHEST SECURITY, except for 2 of them:

MAXIMUM PROTECTION -  disallow unsolicited inbound traffic

CHECKED:  STEALTH MODE (not part of default)
CHECKED:  BLOCK PING (not part of default)
-NOT Checked- "STRICT UDP SESSION CONTROL"

 *OUTBOUND CONTROL *
CHECKED  (all that follow):  HTTP,  HTTPS,  FTP,  TELNET,  SMTP,  DNS  ,POP3  ,IMAP,  NNTP,  IRC,  H323,   "ALL OTHER PROTOCOLS"
 -NOT Checked- "NetBIOS"
**INBOUND**
CHECKED: REMOTE MANAGEMENT   -NOT Checked- "NetBIOS"

*ATTACK DETECTION *
CHECKED:   TCP/UDP PORT SCAN, Invalid Source/Destination IP Address, PACKET FLOOD (SYN/UDP/ICMP/Other),
INVALID TCP FLAG ATTACKS (NULL/XMAS/Other), INVALID ICMP DETECTION, MISCELLANEOUS (Whatever THAT means!)
 -NOT Checked- "EXCESSIVE SESSION DETECTION"

LOOK GOOD?
will my neighbors be able to hack me?

the two firewall rule applies to the computer

you are using a totaly different system for one firewall and one on your computer ;-)

so the router/firewall should stop the junk, and your computer firewall is on for insurance for anything it misses ;-)

consider the router/firewall a mini computer with it's own operating system
