I installed Zonealarm Free from the Cnet download site. It has completely upset my machine. The internet connection no longer exixts, there are no restore points available, the date and time are all wrong. I am finding it difficult even to access Safe Mode because it immediately restarts. Although the Desktop appears most of the programs don't work. I have been told that only a complete reinstal will cure it and then I will have to find and install my programs afresh. Is this correct? Fortunately I have an old spare machine I can use. Any comments,anyone?

I wish I could be of assistance but I stopped using ZoneAlarm when I was still on a Windows 95 machine. Unless someone else has a better idea, my suggestion is to uninstall ZA and then run System File Checker.

The System File Checker tool

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow (note the space before the backslash)

When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

As I recall, you use Windows XP and you may need to slip stream the ServicePacks. See here for additional info.

If the System File Checker tool does not work, try a repair install. Your documents and programs should not be impacted with a repair.

Hello Corrine.
Thank you for your response. Sorry for the delay in replying,I have had some problems. Your solution did not work. I reloaded XP again and discovered that it can be loaded only for a specific number of times, which I appear to have exceeded, and then the key does not.work. I can't load any updates. My son has a computer tech friend who builds specialist computers and networks professionally. He said my machine is not worth repairing even if I bought all the bits and did it myself as it is 5 years old. A copy of XP SP3, reputedtly genuine, is nearly half the price of W 7. He recommended Compaq and I can get a base unit with Athlon processor, 500 gb hd, 4gb memory, W 7 Home Premium, etc, new, for 1-1/3 the cost of repair. I don't play games and don't have much correspodence. My son will make a big contrbution for my birthday so that is what I am going to do. Will programs that I have downloaded and which can be trsferred to DVD work with W7?

Hi, zumlif.

I don't know what programs you had on XP and whether they will work on Windows 7. You may find some answers on the Windows 7 Compatibility Center.

You are going to experience quite a change from Windows XP to Windows 7. This old article may help with some of the differences in what you will see: For the ‘former’ Windows XP User – Welcome to Windows 7! .

As to security, the Windows 7 firewall is greatly improved. In fact, I have not found it personally necessary to use a third-party firewall since Windows Vista.

For antivirus software, I really like Microsoft Security Essentials and it performs well on Windows 7.

As a project you could always download and install Linux .
there are a few about most are FREE as they are open source.
I have a copy of Linpus Linux on an old Tower.
It was my 1st PC that I brought it came with windows XP but only had 256 of ram,
and although I updated the ram to 512mb I found it was not running as i did many years ago.
So I installed linux and as it only users a small amout of ram it runs smothly .
as I said you could do it up as a project.

Since I retired I have found my self working harder than ever.
Mind you I dont stop for a Tea brake these days.
