Windows 8: Developer Preview
« on: September 14, 2011, 05:48:46 PM »
The Windows 8 Developer Preview (a pre-beta build) is available for download at http://dev.windows.com/. Both 64-bit and 32-bit versions are available.

Warning: The Developer Preview is just that, a preview. Although relatively stable, it is not even at the Beta stage yet.

Note:  Windows 8 Developer Preview System Requirements

Windows Developer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7:

    1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch

Windows 8: Re-enable Classic Start Menu
« Reply #3 on: September 14, 2011, 05:53:58 PM »
To get back the old start menu, open regedit, goto

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  • change value of RPEnabled from "1" to "0"
  • close regedit, you get your old start menu.

To get back the Metro UI, change the value back to "1"

Windows 8: Developer Preview Apps Won't Open (Min. Screen Resolution)

Windows 8 apps won’t open? Here’s the fix. | Ed Bott

In every case I’ve seen so far, the cause of this problem is a screen resolution that is set below the minimum screen resolution for Windows 8: 1024×768. This appears to be especially likely to happen if you’re running in a windowed virtual machine or on a netbook with limited graphics hardware.

Getting started with the Windows 8 Developer Preview

So, you've installed the Windows 8 Developer Preview and you're feeling a bit disoriented? You've got company. And you've come to the right place.

Windows 8 introduces some fundamental changes to the way familiar actions work, and the demos Microsoft has been offered are typically geared toward showing off new touchscreen devices. If you're like most people, you're trying Windows 8 on a conventional PC equipped with a keyboard and mouse.

Ed  has assembled a collection of shortcuts and tips to help navigate the "reimagined" Windows 8 interface.  See Windows 8 shortcuts and secrets (Developer Preview edition) | ZDNet

The Windows 8 user experience presents a major departure from previous versions of the operating system. Microsoft has developed an interface that finally makes touch a first class citizen. Does it come at a cost though?

See the detailed review of Windows 8 Developer Preview by Microsoft MVP Andre Da Costa at ActiveWin.com: Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview - Preview.
