Raven at computers over at the GardenWeb sent me here.  I will try to be as specific as I can about my problem as I am a complete idiot when it comes to computers.  Sometime last week I had a trogen horse show up on my screen through Avast.or Malwarbyes, don't remember which. anyway I sent to the vault.  Next some kind of program about virus removing tools showed up.  It was a devil to get it off the screen and I don't remember how I did it.  Anyway I did complete deep scans with Malwarebyes and Avast.  It showed some things that needed to deleted and I did it.  In the meantime I wanted to do a, forget what the correct term is, a "goback" as I needed to find something I had deleted.  I could NOT do this program. I restarted my computer and this is where all hell broke loose.  When I restarted my computer, a blue screen came up and said someting to the effect : scan disc "D" . press any key after 3 seconds if you do not want to do this scan. I let it do a complete scan, but it did not return my computer to correct screen to use the computer after re-start.  Disc "D" was an external hard drive I had installed, that was full and I removed it. It is no longer in use.  I have another external hard drive installed.  I probably have bits and pieces of the virus on this computer but I don't know how to get rid of them.  Please help me, I don't know beans about a computer, what I know I have learned on my own.  Regards, P.K. in La.   ps, My son had limewire and a bunch of I-phone stuff on my computer which I removed with Revo, or hope I got all of it.  PK

Yes, please, I want you to also run RootRepeal as indicated in that topic.  I also want to see a copy of the last MBAM log.

Thank you.

On the root file, a pop up came up and said it could not read registrys.  Regards, and Thank YOU, P.K.

Corrine

I deleted the duplicates of the MBAM scan.

Before scanning, it is extremely important to get the most recent version of the definition files.  You are way behind with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.41, Database version: 3082.  The current version is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.42, Database version: 3305.

Please scan with MBAM again, being careful to check the settings as posted below:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

    • Click Remove Selected.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    • Please post contents of that file in your next reply and a fresh HijackThis log.
Also, since you were unable to run RootkitRepeal, please GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.

    • Double-click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. UNtick the following ...

      • Sections
      • IAT/EAT
      • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
      • Show All (don't miss this one)

Click the image to enlarge it
    • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
    • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post
    • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply

**Caution**  Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

After I installed the new version of Malawarebytes, it said I have to re-start my computer.  I cannot do this as that scan file D thing comes up. I can try to hit a key before 3 seconds and see if the most recent version of malwarebytes was installed, but i don't think it will be.

Corrine

The computer need to be restarted in order to install the updated database.  I would like a fresh MBAM scan since the definitions from your version are over two months old.  The next steps will also require restarts.

Did you set Avast to scan external drives?  If so, launch Avast and remove that option.

I restarted my computer, that blue screen came up again, Scan Disc D, I got out of it after I hit a key before 3 seconds.I wish you could tell me how to get that thing off of my computer every time I restart it.    It took about 25 min. for my screen to come back up.  About half of my icons are gone.  I went into the computer and found malwarebytes and it is the new updated version.  I ran a quick scan and found 11 infected objects. They were all active X pop cap gam downloader.  What do you want me to do with them?  I have not removed them. I will send you a copy of the new log. Thank you, P.K.

piggy

I had to remove the infected stuff before I could do a copy of the log.  Log below.  Are you sure this is  not a bad hard drive?  Regards, P.K.Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.42
