Howdy LandzDown Gurus

I've somehow become responsible for fixing the "better halfs" computer.  When we try to open any files windows askes to choose a program to open this file(ex: erunt, rootrepeal, rsit).  I was also unable to run AVG except for in safe mode, but I'm not certain I know what to do with the .txt file. Get misdirected when using search engines and I'm certain there's other issue.
  -  Windows XP SP3

I would appreciate any help possible. Thanks in advance!

Corrine

Hi, Lonestar.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

We will do our best to assist you.  However, in order to do so, please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

NOTE: If you are using IE and unable to download RKill, please do the following in order to proceed:

Disable Internet Explorer Proxy Settings

It is very important that these steps be carried out exactly as shown otherwise the fix will not work.
If you have any questions please ask before moving on.
  • Please start Notepad and using your mouse make sure you select and copy all the information below in the Code box into your new document.
  • Then save the file as "fixme.bat" to your Desktop
  • In the drop down box for Save as type: make sure you select All Files (*.*) and keep the quotes on the name as well.  Then close the new file.
@ECHO OFF
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyOverride /f
reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable  /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

  • On Windows XP you can double-click the file to run it.
  • On Vista/Win7 you need to Right click the file and choose Run as administrator to run it.  With User Account Control on it should ask permission to run it.  Click Yes
  • This will flash a black DOS box very quickly and go away, this is normal.  Now relaunch Internet Explorer and see if you can connect to the Internet.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Please download rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

  • Double-click rkill to run.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
  • Do NOT restart your computer after running rkill as the malware program(s) will start again.
Notes:

If you you receive security warnings about rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:

  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here on Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt and C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply and the RSIT logs.

Corrine,  Thanks for the response. I have downloaded erunt, rootrepeal, rsit and rkill on an external HD. Although I'm unable to open any files as windows is asking me to choose a program to open said file with.  Just relized I'm able to open files in safe mode. Should I follow the "Log Posting Instructions" in safe mode?

Corrine

Hi, Lonestar.

Instead of Safe Mode, select Safe Mode with Networking. (To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter on your keyboard. Windows will now boot into safe mode with networking and prompt you to login as a user.)

Please start Internet Explorer, and when the program is open, do the following:
-- click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options.
-- click on the Connections
-- click on the Lan Settings button tab
-- under the Proxy Server section, please uncheck the checkbox labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
-- press the OK  button to close this screen. Then press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen.

Next, run RKill as instructed above, followed by MBAM and the RSIT logs.

Corrine

Hi, Lonestar.

You haven't run Malwarebytes yet, have you?  Please do so as instructed above and post the log.  Then we'll continue with the cleanup.  You have extremely outdated and vulnerable software on your computer that we need to address to help prevent further infections like this.

Note:  you may need to run RKill again if you have shutdown the computer before running Malwarebytes.

Yeah I figured any her computer was in need of some help before this happened. Again Thanks for taking the time to help me, I really do appreciate your time!

Corrine

Let's see if you can do this from normal mode.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.  This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you use AVG, you must also open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar as well as the following:

  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced Settings.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • To re-enable AVG 8, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

Now, please run ComboFix:

  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.

  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

There is no system tray icon and I'm unable to open the program as windows request I pick a program to open avg.  Theres also avgrsx.exe and avgwdsvc.exe both running in task manager that I can't stop, If that matters.  Is this acceptable and should I continue with combofix? Thanks again for your help :goodie:

Corrine

Can you select "end process" with Task Manager for the AVG items?

Lonestar

I can but the process doesn't seem to stop. When I hit end process it just creates another avgrsx.exe.

Paddy

The first thing you want to try is to locate AVG in the Add/Remove Control Panel and try to remove it from there for now, till Corrine gets on top of this problem you can always reinstall it again if you so wish after you are clean..

Follow these instructions to do this.

1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Open Add/Remove Programs
3) Find AVG in the Programs list and highlight it
4) Click Remove and follow the prompts to uninstall AVG Free

Thanks, Paddy.

Lonestar,

AVG does tend to interfere with the running of ComboFix.  Other than the instructions I provided above, this is what I found in the AVG FAQ's for disabling AVG:  http://free.avg.com/us-en/faq.num-1311

If your "better half" wishes to continue using AVG, it should be upgraded to the latest version, AVG 9, which can be downloaded from http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

I suggest downloading either AVG 9 or one of the following, which are also free for personal use:

avast! 5 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Microsoft Security Essentials

Next, uninstall AVG 8.5, run ComboFix, post the ComboFix log here and ASAP, install either the updated AVG 9 or one of the other three selections from above.

Lonestar

Paddy - I'm unable to access the "add or remove programs" file - Error C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe - application not found....

Corrine - Since I can't seem to remove or open it to disable AVG what are my options?

Sorry to be a bother and I do appreciate all the help!
