anyone with at&t/yahoo dsl
« on: June 24, 2007, 12:07:37 PM »
hi,
i have signed up for att dsl and im wondering if anyone here has att yahoo dsl and if so is there a 'minimal install' to get online. im getting the 'self install' kit this up coming week and i really dont want to install the entire cd that comes with it.
i called their tech dept last night and i can use belkin, netgear, d-link 4 port wired routers. what other wired 4 port routers would work? the cheaper the better;-D
thanks

Been a few years since I had DSL through AT&T (SBC back then, Ameritech before that).  But, I think this will work.

First, do this:  http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8346  You'll need to direct-connect the modem to your PC for this part.  You'll establish your main sign-in information through this.

After you get your Member ID and Password information, then throw the router into the picture.  In theory, any router that supports PPPoE will work.  Whether it has 1 port, 4 ports, wireless, whatever - just look for PPPoE support (pretty common, I think).

If you run into hiccups, post over at DSLReports.  I know when I had SBC Yahoo! DSL, the SBC forums (particularly the Midwest forums, given that's where I was) were very valuable and helpful for myself and others that posted.

Hope that helps,

Aaron

I have BT/Yahoo (in the UK), which I expect is similar as it bundles all the Yahoo 'bloatware'. I use a D-Link wireless router, and the BT/Yahoo CD has stayed in the box where it belongs.  I've set this up for other as well with Belken, Linksys and Netgear. I've also proved that I can use a Speedtouch 330 by using the s/w downloaded from the Thompsom/Speedtouch website, rather than the ISP's s/w, but of course you need web access to get that in the first place.

I need to revise my first reply.  According to the page at DSLR I linked to, the modem handles the PPPoE login itself.  If this is the case for the modem you receive, then the router would not need to support PPPoE.  I would imagine it would only need to support gathering an IP address via DHCP, which again is something common among today's routers, whether one port, three port, wired, wireless...

Hi Ghost  :D

My dsl plan isn't blazing fast either, but a very pleasant speed bump leaving dialup behind.  It has especially been nice with a work schedule that has increased for me too.  An old "dozer" that feels like home, eh?  It actually sounds like a nice opportunity.

You hang in there with your schedule, and the "distractions" online that happen when you go from dialup to high speed.

I am lovin' being able to watch and listen to music, vids, etc., as well as it being so much easier keeping this computer "maintained" with updates for security reasons.
