Gmail woes
« on: March 29, 2007, 10:26:27 PM »
It's been stated in many places that is is not a good idea to use the email service from one's ISP, because one would have to change email addresses everytime one changes ISPs.  For that reason, I decided it might be time to use the gmail accounts, that I have had for many months, exclusively for sending and receiving email.

Within two days after making the switch, three emails bounced; one sent to Comcast, one sent to AOL and one to an att.net address.  To make matters worse, the mail delivery failure notices were sent to the spam folder by gmail.  I normally use POP to check my gmail with OE and would never have seen the failure notices, but I made it a habit to quickly scan the contents of the spam folder via the gmail website and caught the legitimate failure notices.  On all three, the reason cited for bouncing was code 550, abuse/spam.

Gmail has some very good features, but because some emails from gmail get blocked, and the failure notices go to the spam folder, I have lost my enthusiasm for and confidence in gmail.  I can tolerate spam in the inbox more than I can tolerate my email being blocked.  A Google search reveals that I am not alone in my frustration with the issue of gmail being blocked.  So it's back to my ISP's email.

Have any Landzdowners run into similar problems with gmail?

i've used gmail for about a year
and i would suggest if you are going to use the e-mail way that you do check the spam folder at least once a week !!

now just on a hunch have you tried to send mail by g-mail and not OE ????????
why i say that is if you are using your e-mail program then a spam filter could see that the return address is "spoofed"
such as it was sent on say AOL and then to Gmail and then to comcast

so i would suggest that you go back to gmail as webmail and see what happens???

i have nothing but nice things to say about gmail myself !

when i was on a dialup all my friends had my isp mail and gmail as a backup, and gmail always got through and my isp would be blacklisted for several days

so i have
1. my isp and now it is reliable
2. gmail for good backup or for people i don't trust with my address ( people that always forward junk to me and don't think about it )
3. a trash mailbox with hotmail...when on a site or needing to register and not sure i willuse a hotmail address and then no one can find me for spam !

I have Gmail but I only use webmail.  That way I can access my email from anyplace.  Personally, however, I don't care for Gmail.  I don't like the "conversations".  I would much rather create folders and move email I wish to keep to the folders than selecting labels.

Mitch, you have good suggestions, but I much prefer using Outlook Express so that I can keep all the email from different accounts in one place.  I like composing email in OE rather than on the web.  I check the spam folders almost daily on gmail, or on some gmail accounts the spam list would be so long it would be several pages I'd have to flip through to scan them all.

I thought that by setting up gmail as an account in OE using POP/SMTP it was going directly in and out of gmail and not being forwarded.

In any case, I'd stick with gmail except for the delivery failure issue.  I still have to keep the accounts alive because I receive a lot of stuff on gmail from friends, businesses, etc., but won't be replying or relying on gmail.

Just an update: a Google search on "gmail delivery failure" brings a lot of hits indicating that the problem of gmail being blocked is recent and widespread.  Many are indicating that they have had no problems until the past couple of days and some responders concur while others indicate that they still have no problems.  Could this be the gmail apocalypse or a glitch?
