that's terrible.
i guess we need to add BAE.DLL and GoogleAFE to the list of things we DON'T want.

(thanks so much for posting that, corrine... visiting LandZ sure helps keep me up-to-date on many of the "tricks" advertisers and spammers are using.)

i recently noticed some odd things when i didn't type in fuly formed URL's in the address bar.
for instance:

in FIREFOX
http://
gets me "THIS IS NOT A VALID URL!"

but, "http://www" gets me the YAHOO homepage http://www.yahoo.com/

in OPERA, http://www leads to a search engine at http://www.www.com/ (not what i'd intended, but a more logical "guess."

* in OPERA, http://http gets me a page filled with ads: http://www.http.com/
in FF, it gets me to info on the transfer protocol - http://www.w3.org/Protocols/

** it's likely the way browsers "guess" at completing incomplete domain URL addresses, but interesting to see how browsers handle the requests differently, and how spammers and advertisers take advantage of it. (presumably, alot of people mistakenly try to reach URL's like "http://www" etc each day.)

There's also those sneaky *bums* who take advantage of typos.  Its called "Typosquatting":

Generally, the victim site of typosquatting will be a frequently visited website. The typosquatter's URL will usually be one of four kinds, all similar to the victim site address:

    * A common misspelling of the intended site: exemple.com
    * A misspelling based on typing errors: xample.com or exxample.com
    * A differently phrased domain name: examples.com
    * A different top-level domain: example.co.uk

Once in the typosquatter's site, the user may also be tricked into thinking that they are in fact in the real site; through the use of copied or similar logos, website layouts or content. Sometimes competitors of the victim site will do this.

Alternatively, the user will be forwarded to a site of a completely different nature to what they intended. This tactic was infamously used by John Zuccarini, who redirected domains targeting children to pornographic websites. Sometimes, the typosquatters will use the false addresses to distribute viruses, adware, spyware or other malware. Some are also shock sites, such as "valve-software.com." More common are benign but irrelevant and useless domain parking sites, selling advertising to firms based on keywords similar to the misspelled word in the domain.

And thank you Corrine for letting me know about this thread.  Some of the 404 pages are hysterical and it really makes me want to create something special for my sites.

I actually heard from Google this morning and they wanted me to provide them with the url I tried so they could clean it up.
They also wanted to be sure that my page includes a "What's This" link which points to the following...

http://www.google.com/hws/gateway/afe?hl=en
I'm still more annoyed at Gateway for continuing to make money off me after I just spent $4000+ on my new system.

Dell is no better.  They also use  BAE.DLL and explain it at http://www.google.com/hws/dell/afe?hl=en

i post at forums.scotsnewsletter.com, (and elsewhere) but today in ff, typed "f" on the address line to bring up that site to click on it, as i always do.

instead i got, well, open ff and type in f and hit go.
it's not porn, or an evil site, but the url is pretty rank.

ps,
it's valid scientifically as it is repeatable.
and i've never been to that site before.

pps,
yeah, i know, it's not a 404, but the topics drifting this way... :p

okay -- how'd they manage THAT trick???   :blink:

FF is usually good about saying NOT A VALID URL...

this didn't even have the "http://" prepended to it.

...i'm going to do some more experimenting.

-- the page we hit, when we type "f" must be something FIREFOX is doing (like the GATEWAY situation... unless ADWARE changed the browser's functionality somehow...)

i figured it out.

temmu -- go into GOOGLE, type "F" then hit return.

that same page shows up Number One.

FF is simply working as a "search engine" when we type in single letters, and pulling up the very 1st return in Google.

you'll get identical pages, in FF and in the 1st position in google's returns, if you hit the letter "A" or "B" "C" etc.

funny. i never knew FF would "guess" at webpages like that
